MI DUers heads up: New bill to kill mourning doves
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 02:20 PM by Mari333

Representative Susan Tabor has introduced H.B. 5029, a bill that would allow a hunt on mourning doves in Michigan and transfer the legislature's right to designate game species to the state Natural Resource Commission.
Status: H.B. 5029 was introduced on August 13, and is now under consideration by the House Committee on Conservation and Outdoor Recreation.

Background: Michigan has outlawed the hunting mourning doves since 1905, but legislation is introduced nearly every year to attempt to reverse the ban. Special interests have so far failed to change the status of Michigan's mourning doves from songbird to game bird because a majority of citizens oppose the recreational shooting of doves.

The Ted Nugent assholes are going to try it again....contact your senators and reps...

Make it clear you do not want recreational hunting "management" used on this songbird.

Dove hunting is inherently cruel. Statistics show that nearly 20% of doves shot by hunters are wounded and not retrieved.

Mourning doves are small birds, yielding very little meat. Hence, dove hunting amounts to nothing more than target practice for hunters.

1. Well, I intend to ask my state senator, Mike Goschka (R), about this
Mike's actually a reasonable guy, the (R) notwithstanding. I'm fairly certain my state rep, Carl Williams (D) is against this.
John
I suspect most hunters in this part of the state would look at dove hunting as beneath them. Deer hunting is a multi-million dollar industry here in northeastern Michigan (as it is all over the state), but doves are, well, doves.

6. two points
are doves over populated ? Over population of a species causes far more unpleasant death than misses (starvation is not fun even for a bird).

Doves, while small, have more meat than you think and are really tasty. Two make a fine lunch for me or dinner for the wife.

I do think that the bag limit for hunters coming into your yard wanting to shoot crows ought to be unlimited though ! Do you guys not have laws prohibiting shooting within a certain proximity of a residence ?

2. Hell's Bells!
will these freaks never stop?
last year, these freaks in full camo and face paint drove into my driveway in northern michigan and asked if they could hunt the crows in my yard!
had they not been armed with fully automatic rifles, i would have suggested they search eBay under GET A FREAKIN' LIFE!

5. I'll have to ask the "gun guys" at work about this one....
Hopefully it will be like you said John, that hunting doves is "beneath" them.

I'll have to check with my state rep--you can't always trust democrats to be correct on the issues up here in the north.

7. We're into the first mourning dove season in Wisconsin now
These idiots feel that they have the right to shoot anything that moves! Much the same crew that backed the dove hunt have now moved on to the "heater packing" concealed carry issue.
