This is an E-mail I sent to Sean Hannity, and copied Alan Colmes on, concerning comments made by Shawn it his outragous reporting of the Terri Schieivo case last night. Let's see if Shawn will have anything to say for himself on this.
Subject: Why the rush in the Terri Schiavo's case?
Dear Sean:
I heard you pose the question on your show last night as to why there is such a rush in the Terri Schiavo case that your program is currently covering. Why can’t we wait another week or another month before we decide on this matter? Well let’s explore that question for a moment Sean and see what we find.
I suppose we could ask, why not wait another week, or another month, or for that matter another year. Better yet why not wait another 10, 20, or maybe 30 years. We certainly have the medical technology to keep Terri alive pretty much indefinably, so why not wait and see what happens?
After all in another 10 years medical science could have advanced to the point where they just might come up with a procedure that we could fix Terri with and if she develops other problems along the way while we are waiting, we can deal with it. If her lungs start to give out, well we can hook her up to a respirator, if her kidneys start to fail, we can roll in a dialysis machine to solve that problem also, and if she starts to develop cardio pulmonary problems, well we have machines for that too. In fact, if we want we could probable keep Terri alive until she is nothing more than a basic skeleton with a thin layer of skin covering her. Besides that, if we keep prolonging her life long enough we just might get the much vaunted, and supposed, miracle that yourself and others are claiming could come about. So why not keep Terri alive indefinably?
Well Sean, here’s why we can’t do that. We can’t do that because that has been what we have already done for the last 15 years and the fact is Terri hasn’t gotten better. In fact she has gotten worse and is to the point where 8 separate neurologist have concluded and testified before the courts overseeing this matter, that she is not going to get better, so at some point we have to accept the realties of life and do what is best for Terri.
And while you and others are claiming that we haven’t looked at this hard enough, that the courts have not afforded Terri her full judicial review and due process, those claims are simply not true Sean. As the guest neurologist you had on the show last night, who has examined Terri and testified before the court in this matter stated, “This is the longest running medical case in legal history”, so you see Sean we have done all that is medically and judicially possible and the fact still remains that Terri is not going to get better, and she is very possible suffering in ways we can’t even imagine. No, you see Shawn, the problem here is twofold: First we have a set of parents, Mr. and Mrs. Schindler’s, Terri’s parents, who for whatever reason are unable to come to terms with the fact that their daughter is gone and are unable to let go and do what is in the best interest of their daughter. Both of Terri’s parents are on record as stating that even if Terri had a living will directing what her wishes were in this matter that they would still try to keep her alive. So clearly, for whatever reason, the Schindler’s are unwilling or unable to put their daughters best interest above their own and do what has to be done to promote and protect Terri’s interest and wishes. Clearly, as a just an humane society the courts cannot in good conscience allow the Schindler’s to continue to perpetuate their shortcomings on their daughter and therefore are required to bring this to an end. In addition, while I have compassion for the grief they are, and have been suffering over this ordeal, they just are unable to do what is best for their daughter in this matter, so someone has to be responsible for getting it done.
We also have the sanctity of marriage issue which arises in this case. You remember that issue don’t you Sean, the issue that you and the Republicans have been proclaiming all over the place for the last year as to why we can’t allow gay marriage in this country.
Well the court has an obligation to protect the sanctity of marriage in this case and must do such by recognizing the primacy of the marital relationship and the testimony of Terri’s husband, Mike, that being a living vegetable is what Terri did not want and in fact communicated her intention on this issue to him within the confines of their marriage. We have to protect that Sean because when a husband and wife cannot rely on our government to not interfere with private communications that go on between them within such a private and important relationship, well then we all are in real trouble. Surely you can see that, cant you Sean?
So Sean, why don’t you take this opportunity to do the right thing on your show tonight and proclaim that we all need to do what is in Terri’s best interest, not her parents, who by virtue of the marital relationship between Terri and Mike do not have primary standing in this case, not the religious special interest groups who have a particular ideology to promote, and not the Congress who have a political base they want to garner votes from and have shown that they are willing to resort to unconstitutional means to achieve such. Let’s do what is best for Terri and not prolong her suffering, and the suffering of others anymore, and at the same time do what is best for Americans and help keep the government out of our lives.
In addition, while I understand that by the time your show airs tonight this case may have already been rejected by the Supreme Court, and they will reject it when it is presented to them because it is the correct legal decision to make and they have demonstrated in the past that they typically don’t cave in to political pressure, much of this may already be moot.
However, I now understand from your network that Gov. Bush of Florida is once again calling on the Florida Legislature to act in an unlawful manner, as they previously did concerning this case, and once more interfere. Lets not let that happen Sean, what do you say. Can we get that done?
