How DU-ERS can oust *Bush!
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 10:12 PM by gully
We can bitch the rest of our lives and accomplish nothing or we can act, right?

We had a Grass Roots idea tonight in the GD C-Span thread.

We watched Bill Clintons amazing speech as he said if people only knew what the Bush admin is doing to them....He went on to give many 'talking points' to Dems and others about the human cost of the Bush tax cut etc. He also said Bush is well aware of what he's doing.

Anyhow...I thought, we have many DU-ers all over the US. Why can't we educate people in every state from now until election time.

Friends and I have spoken about this, but I wasnt sure how to make it happen. With all the brilliant minds here at DU, I know WE can make a real difference.

Here's the thought we came up with here...

1. It would be great if we could link/create an educational website for people to learn about the effect of Bush's decision's on ordinary people. Enter Molly Ivins new book, Bill Clintons talking points etc... The process could start with the talking points and anything else we feel relevant.

2. We could have a printable 'educational' flyer at said website for people to print from home and have people in every state of the country commit to distributing x amount of flyers per week. (We could do so at grocary stores, church's, the bar, where ever?)

We have great connections here at DU. I imagine the ABB website would participate by having a flyer, and perhaps DU would have a printable flyer here? But I think it would be best to have a non-partisian site eventually as were trying to win swing votes more than anything?

Thoughts? Let's do it! WE can make a difference!!!!

PS I don't have the best 'way' with words, so I hope this is coherent.

Suggestions, brain-storming, ideas welcome...

5. we have talked so many times about...
...flyering the country, but nothing has taken off.

There are so many opportunities in our days to leave something that could reach just one person. Doctors office, library bulletin board, senior citizen center, outside the welfare office, supermarket bulletin boards, gatherings such as fairs and expos, craft shows, food banks, etc. etc. etc.

And another idea is putting post-its everywhere. On the back of the bathroom stall door, on pay telephones, at bus stops, etc. Write your postits up ahead of time and just keep the pad in your bag.

"Don't blame me, I voted for Gore" is still a good slogan.

7. hehehe, grasswire, your comments about putting
notes everywhere reminded me. I recently spearheaded a campaign designed to embarrass and hopefully get rid of a company here in Texas. My better half works in a hospital which recently outsourced her department to a company from California. We managed to get our hands on a confidential memo written by the VP of the company which laid out in no uncertain terms the company's policys for "cutting costs associated with hourly employee wages". Right wing "cheap labor" conservatives all the way.
We brought in a couple of outsiders (my own blood kin, die hard dems, of course), sent them into the hospital with a few hundred flyers which they promptly taped EVERYWHERE. In the halls, bathrooms, computers, doorways, you name it.

It was wonderful. The big mouthed VP had to fly in from California to "explain" and current rumor has it that when their 6 months are up which is the end of this month, they will be outta here.

We hope so anyway.

So yes, grassroots efforts can work, and they are a lot of fun.

8. This would be a great idea.
I have voted in every election since I became a citizen, but have never been involved in activism. I have been trying to spread the word: every time somebody makes a comment about ANYTHING (and I mean anything) I bring up Bush* and how his group of goons affects our lives. I did this at my doctor's office on Sept 11: he was saying that he hoped there would be no "terraist" attack on that day. I quickly replied "yes, you are right, because Bush* has really increased the chances for terrorism to occur. And going after Iraq instead of Al-Qaeda, when there was no link between the two, has made the United States really vulnerable." He looked really puzzled and said, Oh...
But I would love to be able to spread the word by using a handout. Do you have any idea how you get authorization to leave handouts at stores, malls, etc.? Or can you go house to house? I am a total novice on this.

Have you looked for them? I see them every day, mostly through links here on DU and most of the sites are by DUers. I'll look through my bookmarks on my computer at work when I get there on Tuesday. I know democrats.com does one, and there's a Freedom Flyers group in Yahoo that does great flyers.

Young DUers, don't waste your time reinventing the wheel. Some of the most informed people I hae ever seen are here on DU. Make a links file, or do a save as and make an archive file on your hard drive of all the articles and links that you come across here.

12. Big Deal!! (Count me IN!!!)

Really. I mean it.

I would even be quiet about Kerry.

A Bullet Flyer with talking points and internet directions to a flameless website to underscore the stupidity and fascism and evil of Bush and company would really work.

I work with the poor - and Clinton (and Kerry) DESTROYED a lot of people with the DLC Rethuglican-like welfare reform act. More people are suffering and dying every day because of these DLC bastards.

So I am not too gung ho about Mr. Clinton's self-serving advice.

But I would love to help diseminate information if someone puts it together to organize the folks I see every day in the inner city.

It's a good idea.

We the people of the United States are totally opposed to and fed up with the incompetency and corruptness of the current BUSH administration and their DESTRUCTION of our constitutional and human rights and the human rights of our fellow human beings around the world, etc.

We oppose this insane war and seek the safe return of our troops immediately as well as a plan under which the United States withdraws its soldiers from Iraq immediately and the United Nations and the Iraqi people come up with a plan for internal economic and physicial security guaranteed by the United Nations and the community of states which comprise it, etc.

We Desire and encourage the TOTAL and COMPREHENSIVE removal of the George W.Bush regime and all of its inept and self-serving toadies - including the immediate and permanent removal of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Abrams, Negroponte, Ashcroft, Mueller, POINDEXTER, and ANY other cabinet or executive appointee who have tried to usurp and demean the CONSTITUTION of the United States and wreak havoc and destruction globally and/or who have committed crimes againmst humanity in the name of the American people.

We base our political feelings on the utter and disgraceful FAILURE of the Bush administration to take care of our economic and military security and his anti-American actions which is sending our economy into a desperate downward spiral and collapse in favor of the corporations and the wealthy individuals (from Saudi Arabia to Israel, and from the Congo, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela to Texas)who FINANCE and support the extreme right wing of the Republican party represented by Bush and his father and his VP and cabinet.

The following examples of George Dubya Bush's incmpetence and danger to our families' security is found in the foillowing points:

(LIST THEM NOW FOLKS, I'm fading)

!. Unemployment is going through the goddamn roof
2. Health Care is unaffordable and sending us ALL to the poor house
3. The Universe hates us for our guzzling of gas and our reliance on fossil fuels which you seem intent on KEEPING (along with radiation emitting Nukes) as the cancer causing leading edge of your energy nonpolicy
4. Perpetual war and terro for all of us.
5. The gutting AND disemboweling of our constitutional right to a lawyer, right to trial, rights to privacy, and right to education, inter alia.
6.
7.

It is TIME for us ALL to be involved and take BACK our country from the right wing scumbags whoi disenfranchised the American people and STOLE the 2000 and 2002 elections.

Bush and his minions CHEATED.

We DESERVE a UNITED STATES OF AMERICA which belongs to US.

28. Wonderful, but too much text!
I don't think the average Jane/Joe will read this much text. I think, instead, the flyer needs to look like something from USA Today: bullets, charts, graphs, big headline text.

Maybe I'm wrong. I dunno. But we COULD put all this great text on a website (as mentioned above) and put the web address on the flyer. I'll be glad to paper cars in parking lots around here, and I'll also be glad to help with the text/layout.

Suggested points (with graphics):

- compare economy under Clinton and Bush
- compare Federal spending (including "tax cuts") under Dems vs. Pukes
- list key SCARY features of PATRIOT act, along with "chapter and verse"
- Sept. 11: Find and quote diametrically opposed statements from WH/Cia/cabal (not tinfoil hat stuff, but stuff quoted in mainstream media)
- list connections (with quotes from sources such as Dun/Bradstreet, etc.) of Bush* with Bin Ladens, Cheney with Haliburton, Darth Rums with whomever, etc.

Does this make sense?

33. Sure. Edit Down. Best to have something to say and make bullet points
Trim it down.

Thanks for the critique. I wanted to propose it as an example of things that need to be said (with Bullets).

People need to know that there are people who actually CARE whether they have health care or a job or housing and that DEMOCRATS CARE IF THEY VOTE!!!

Getting folks registered and voting and PARTICIPATING (even if it is just to go and vote Democratic) is CRITICAL.

1% can be turned into a 5% margin with a little effort.

I'd love to reach Bush voters somehow, KWIM? We already have US, now we need the un-decided or disgruntled Bush voters, and perhaps some other third party voters who desire a return to sanity.

I love all your ideas, lets keep it rolling.

16. Rough outline of ideas... feel free to add or disagree.
1. I dont want to preach to the choir too much as I think it's more productive to try to reach....a) non-voters b) disgruntled Bush voters c) independents. We are already going to vote against Bush, KWIM? ;)

2. I want to research what issues are most important to Americans ie. jobs, health care, retirement, education etc... and show how Bush has failed in each area (and we know he has, right?) We can use talking points from many sources for this and note websites on the flyer too.

3. I like the idea of simple bulleted facts and a one page flyer/handout as has been mentioned. I also like a 'get out the vote' theme to the whole idea? Perhaps websites with info as to how to register online?

4. Website name ideas... I love to use the rights own words to make a point so how bout...

"personallyresponsible.org" or "personalresponsibility.org" or??? (then we'd list all of the BS Bush is 'personally responsible' for on the flyers. ie. 6500 jobs lost per day or???) he he

or

liberatetheus.org or liberateamerica.org

my dh thought of informnation.org or informednation.org...

any ideas, critiques or disagreements are welcomed.

What do you guys think? Clinton struck a chord when he said only 5% of Americans are actually informed about this stuff. Man!

Thanks again.

liberateamerica.org is available. (this one might be considered too radical if you're going after the swing voters or moderates, etc.)

34. Were's the Democtatic Party ??
This should be their main drive - making the difference between us and them big, bright and bold.

so, if they won't do it, somebody's got to.

The mission statement is wonderful, it belongs as-is on the mission statement page- but the front page should have a flash movie - grabbing peoples' hearts and minds - lots of pictues and graphs - color, movement - big stuff! Soldiers, children, families, workers - show the flag -

AND - now that you've got them, make links to easy to understand and navigate lists - make it searchable.

No name calling, no personal attacks, just the facts, make people feel good about what they find there, or glad to know it at least, and glad to know there's somewhere to go for the truth.

42. I like the idea of flyers
There are a couple ways to do this, you can stand on a street corner handing out a page of info to passersby or you can create an attention getter and have some info on the side and leave them in various places.

I've seen religious tracts that look like money that fell out of people's pockets, you pick them up and the other side is evangelical info. This is a great attention grabber we can steal.

Another way to spread the news is to hang posters in public places or, if you live on a busy street, hang signs in your window. When the invasion of Iraq began, I had the Bill of Rights displayed in such a manner that anyone who came to my house saw it.

If you do a lot of driving in metropolitan areas, paint a message on the top of your vehicle. Those who work above the first floor will get a very good view of your message. This works best with vans.

And also, never forget the power of money. It's not illegal to write slogans on bills, it is illegal to make it so that cash machines can't read it or to obscure the true denomination.

44. Great stuff...
I like having many flyers and one website for info. Now, I've never built a site, so??? anytakers...?

I'd be willing to try ;)

We'll have to vote on a name...

Do you like the idea of being somewhat non-partisan and just sticking to facts?

48. Hi gully
I think that we should try to present the facts in a straightforward, nonpartisan way. Swing voters and moderates are generally turned off by even the slightest hint of radicalism whether it's right wing or left wing. Of course, it will be next to impossible to not appear partisan when our primary agenda here is to oust the guy in the whitehouse. But I think we should aim to be as nonpartisan as possible-- maybe just try appealing to voters' common sense.

Speaking of which, my DH bought the domain commonsense2004.org several months ago and he has never done anything with it. He said we can have that one if y'all want. Or we could use one of the many great ideas already submitted. I don't have a preference really so I will let y'all decide on the name. Maybe take a poll to decide?

If no one can volunteer to build the site I will try to find time to do it but it may be awhile before I can get started on it. It would be great if someone can volunteer their skills and get the ball rolling.

Thanks!
Kayeleigh

Any objections?

I can try to find a website builder if need be? I know nothing about it, sorry...

46. For my 1000th post
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 07:44 PM by steviet_2003
How about domain names based upon quotes from our founding fathers or other great americans of the past. After all, we want independents and repugs to visit as well and let them all know that we are doing this for our great natiion. It can't sound obviously progressive. A few examples:

weholdthesetruths.org
givemeliberty.com
amoreperfectunion.org
wethepeople.org (i am sure this one is probably taken.)

Just look at some of the sig lines here on DU, there are TONS of great quotes that all americans are familiar with.

ok, now, for the only time here, i get to look at my post saying 1000 posts, after this one it will be 1000+.

on edit: I got cheated!!!! went from 999 straight to 1000+, arghhh!!

52. I think a poll would be a good idea.
Narrow down to the nine best and put them to a vote with the 10th poll slot for "other, please list." There are maybe 40 or 50 already on this string to choose from but a thread dedicated just to naming a bipartisan "Vote out this admin" site could generate some great ones.

56. Yes!
Great idea to narrow it down before starting a poll. I have one request. If y'all have an idea for a name, please go to http://www.networksolutions.com and look it up to see if it's available before posting it. I haven't looked up all of the suggestions but many of the ones I did look up are unavailable. Based on availability we can narrow the choices down pretty quickly :)

and the offer is outstanding. I do still like your idea of a poll, however. No need to rush, it can wait for a day to see if anything else comes up to knock our socks off, if not commonsense2004.org is still there.

63. Clinton talkingpoints...a jumbled summary..
Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 11:28 AM by gully
we'll make sense of stuff later...

We'll have to put together people to research each position i.e. economy, security etc... and find links to more information etc?

I've chosen stuff from what the other candidates had to say also. I'll attempt to make some sense of it, but I'd rather think in terms of a 'draft' to work from and inspire other ideas.

Here goes...

Fiscal Responsibility-George Bush was handed a surplus and created the most extensive deficit in our nations history. In spite of that fact he pushed through a massive tax cut (which mainly benefited those making over 1,000,000.00 per year.)

...Couple links below

http://www.ctj.org
http://www.ctj.org/html/bush0500.htm
http://www.itepnet.org/whopays.htm

Economy and Job Creation-3,000,000.00 Jobs lost (under Bush rule) 2,000,000.00 were manufacturing jobs. *As opposed to job creation under the last administration (sounds less partisan) ;) per-Dean/Kerry/Clinton

9,000,000.00 are out of work today-per Bob Graham

Foreign affairs/war-Squandered national support and has instead created new enemies. In Iraq the US is paying the price. One US soldier parishes each day and 10 more are wounded. In spite of the claim of 'Supporting the troops' Bush and co. are cutting 'combat pay' to soldiers in October. per-CM Braun

National Security-Where to begin here gang. We must dispell the papa Bush keeps us 'safe' syndome. They are fear mongering, while not really offering protection. They tried to eliminate air marshalls on the same day they raised terror alerts (remember)... Bush is not making us 'safer' he has instead created new enemies. He has created a 'recruiting ground' for Al Qaida via the Iraq quagmire. In addition, We are not protecting people with the Patriot Act, we need to educate people as to what it is. That's a flyer in itself huh? ;) I doubt most people know they can be held with out representation, indefinately and soon they'll be able to torture them as well, if the junta* gets their way. I want to try and remain practical in our approach and just inform with out tooo much passion, because it will turn some away, KWIM? It's gonna be tough ;) There is so much here, we'll have to have careful bulleted points that are factual and straight forward, allowing the reader to form an opinion...

Also, the B* admin tried to take 88,000 police officers off the streets (safer?) to pay for the tax cut. They settled for 25,000. They eliminated 100,000 unemployed workers from job training programs (those that were laid off in this new economy) to pay for B*'s tax cut. The eliminated after school programs to keep kids out of trouble and off the streets, to pay for B*s tax cut. They eliminated funding to states to pay for *... The states then made cuts to pay for B*'s tax cut, and so on...They attempted to stop 8,000,000 people from receiving overtime benefits, and were stopped by democrats.

Clinton said (paraphrased)

We went from:

Surplus to record deficit

Job gain to job losses

a reduction in poverty to an increase in poverty

increasing the # of people covered by health insurance to decreasing the # of people with health insurance

Labor and enviromental rights protections to an assult on the afore mentioned.

Record new businesses, record # of millionaries and billionaires to ???

The B*s relaxed clean water and air standards...

We have great links that others have provided here, what we'll have to do is have sections like...

Economy
Terrorism/Homeland Security
Civil Rights
Fiscal responsibility
Jobs
yada yada yada....and perhaps assign each person an area of research?

Thanks again!

I also thought perhaps we could use 'meetup' to organize flyer distributions once we establish a name etc...

I'll start a poll on the name thing...

Much appreciation to our dedicated/intelligent/DU'ers. Please feel free to add or critique.

Again, the plan for the flyer is to narrow it down to short bulleted points... There in lies our dilema ;)

What do you think? Should we just arrange helping them distribute these via meetup..? Or does it seem to partisan and thus we should stick with our original plan?

67. Why Reinvent The Wheel? - www.moveon.org
It's great to see DUers focusing on solutions over problems, but instead of putting our energies towards starting something from scratch, why don't we all become more active in an existing movement?

www.moveon.org springs to mind.

I, for one, am amazed at the job they've been doing - and the publicity they're able to get. It's a grassroots movement, with a base. They have their shit together in the organization and fundraising department. media resources (they run some pretty good ads). Their messages are right on. And they encourage active participation from their members... not just fundraising and "armchair activism".
