Will Defeat of the CA Recall End Ah-nold's Political Career?
I think so. He'll be seen as an inarticulate footnote in an anti-democratic, repuke-led attempt at a coup. In addition, the recall campaign has in just a few short weeks exposed very unseemly aspects of Ah-nold's past, especially his failure to obtain permits to run his businesses.

Who knows, he could end up fined or even deported.

3. I don't think he could be deported
I mean he is a citizen. I do agree that he will never want to run again if he has any skeletons that we haven't found in his closet. Part of me is sad by this (his lack of a plan, and his general incompatance should be enough) but part of me says good ridance.

6. I hope so...
I know one thing. I have a personal vendetta against this person now. He's truly despicable, a true opportunist. He'll say anything, tell any lies, to obtain power for its own sake. He has no agenda at all except for himself.

9. Why should I care one way or another
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 02:13 PM by Classical_Liberal
I am liberal Democrat. Either moderate Republican Arnold is out of the running or moderate Dino Davis is. There are advantages to both ends as for as I am concerned. The best end for me is only if a Liberal ends up ultimate victor over both. The other two ends are neither here nor there. Davis isn't going to push a progressive agenda and Arnold isn't going to threaten the "right to choose". Arnold isn't Bush.

11. Davis is now governing as progressive.
Domestic partnerships, health care mandates for employers, driver license reform. Who can seriously deny that Davis is supporting progressive reform? I can't think of a governor with a better profile on ENACTING these laws. Arnie is not anti-abortion, no. But he is anti-health insurance coverage for the working poor. SB 2, the Health Care For All Act, is enough to make me oppose Arnie and work hard against the recall. This isn't academic--it's going to really affect people, their health care, democratic union rights, to fight to work toward same sex marriage. The list goes on.

13. He wasn't governing as a progressive until threatened with recall
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 02:40 PM by Classical_Liberal
If he wins he will go back to behaving as a Conservative. It is that simple. He is not progressive unless threatened. He didn't give a shit about Health insurance at all until the recall happened.

12. Arnie could threaten abortion rights for young girls.
He has said he favors "parental consent" laws. If he pushed this through, which is within the realm of possibility, that is a restriction of abortion rights. I cannot support anti-choice laws like that, or those who peddle them. Arnie is not reliably pro-choice.

14. That's nice
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 02:39 PM by Classical_Liberal
but as you know the public while prochoice mostly supports parental notification. Furthermore there is no repuke Legislature to go along with Arnold on this. It also doesn't seem to be Arnolds cause. You can't terrify people over this issue like you could with Nader, because there is not serious antichoice candidate.

16. another reason to care
Arnold isn't Bush.
he's trying to imitate some of Bush's worst aspects, though:
A day of division for GOP

``...
Schwarzenegger met with Stephen Moore, president of the Club for Growth, a Washington-D.C.-based anti-tax group, many of whose members back McClintock's fiscal policies. In the 10-minute meeting, Moore said the candidate pledged to consider future tax cuts -- including potentially a flat tax and a capital gains tax cut -- as he prepares an economic plan to be unveiled late next week.

"I don't think he's going to sign a (no new taxes) pledge, but he did say, 'I'm not going to raise taxes, I'm cutting them,' " Moore said. "He said he's going to look at a flat tax, he's going to look at another Gann amendment that would restrict (state government) spending to the rate of growth of income." The Gann amendment, passed in 1979, caps the rate of spending for local governments in California.
