Father of slain soldier speaks out against war
http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2003/September/14/local/stories/03local.htm

WATSONVILLE — Jesus Alberto Suárez del Solar joined the Marines because he wanted to make the world a better place. Long concerned by the social problems caused by drug addiction, the young man believed he could fight drug trafficking through his military experience.

But the 20-year-old warrior was killed fighting by "friendly fire" in Iraq earlier this year when he stepped on an unexploded U.S. cluster bomb. Now his father is speaking out against the war that took his son.<snip>

Fernando Suárez del Solar, who believes military recruiters "put more emphasis and psychological stress" on Latinos and African-Americans, said Latino parents are so busy "working long hours in the fields that they don’t have time to help students get information" about what joining the military will really entail for them, or about other possible career options.

Besides, "the military recruitment information is in English anyway," Suárez del Solar said, and many parents do not read English. <snip>

I doubt that this will make head line news.

5. This is why I support the troops and don't understand...
...posts I have seen on DU suggesting that supporting the troops is supporting Bush. These are our countrymen and our loved ones and neighbors. They are as much victims of this travesty as any innocent killed as "collateral damage" or anyone else. It's up to us to save them. To steal a line from Cheney...."help is on the way!"

6. Absolutely. But let's get one thing straight.
When Republicans brought up this support the troops non sense. They were using the troops as cover for their real agenda which is "Support George Bush". Think about it. What is anyone doing to support the troops? Other than paying taxes, not much.

It's all lip service that really means support George Bush at any cost, even if the cost is the life of your child. Who is supporting the troops now? The troops are forgotten about, now that they have their war on. Even Anne Coulter screwed the troops by he statement "The troops are getting their hair mussed in Iraq".

Hey Anne?! Support the troops by enlisting. Go cover one of their asses on patrol. Then come back and tell me what a fucking patriot you are. Typical Republican bullshit. Support the troops and abandon them, Fly flags on import SUV's. Idiots, all around.
