Howard Dean and Howard Beale are mad as hell, and they won't take it anymore.
Howard Beale, for those who don't remember, is the "Madman of the Airwaves" in Paddy Cheyevsky's film Network. The story, a sort of pre-Bulworth Bulworth, tells of an older guy who's life is going no place, and he decides to let out his rage in a flood of unpallatable truths, which then makes him a populist star.
Now, Dean is not Beale. Dean is not dragging his career from the dregs, nor is he a madman. But Dean, and the characters of Beale and Bulworth, tapped into the current that beats the American heart. Namely, "Tell us the truth. Even if we hate it, we'll love you."
Some people wonder why Dean is riding so high. Other candidates have more experience, other candidates are more progressive, and other candidates are better speakers. Yet Dean is the one who seems to have caught lightning in the bottle. I don't know why it was Dean, maybe it was hard work and timing, ormaybe Dean just got fed up one day, and that comes out in his personality. Whatever the case, he feels like a winner, damn it, and shit to hell, I want to WIN!
I have nothing against Kucinich, or Kerry, or any other Dem candidate(Well, thats a lie. I can't stand Lieberman's voice, his tone, and the shameful way he stabbed Gore in the back. Et tu, Joe?Honorable Joe? We know what Shakespear wrote about honorable men...), and I'll vote for any Dem, PERIOD.
Still, Dean makes me want to stand up and toss my TV out, he makes me want to stand up, and toss Bush out! When I listen to what Dean has said, I'm reminded, just a little, of this speech from Network.
Beale: "I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the streets, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be! We all know things are bad -- worse than bad -- they're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out any more. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we're living is getting smaller, and all we say is 'Please, at least leave us alone in our own living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my my steel-belted radials, and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.'"
"Well I'm not going to leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest; I don't want you to riot; I don't want you to write to your Congressman, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first, you've got to get mad. You've gotta say, 'I'm a human being! My life has value!'"
"So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!!"
IM A HUMAN BEING, MY LIFE HAS VALUE, AND I WANT MY DAMN COUNTRY BACK!!
YEEEHAWW!
lol, sorry :-)
