WHY TWO CLUBS AXED PLIMPTON

BREAKING 30 years of silence, literary lion George Plimpton has finally revealed why he was forced out of two prestigious private clubs in the Hamptons. It turns out his exile from the inner sanctums was spearheaded by the father of a current presidential candidate.

Plimpton tells Avenue magazine columnist Richard Turley, "There were all sorts of wonderful rumors - one that I had entertained midgets in the upper court of the Devon Yacht Club, another that I had asked Muhammad Ali to play golf at the Maidstone, another that I had landed my helicopter and blown sand on the yachts. And I don't have a helicopter.

"The main reason was, we had a party for the Berrigan brothers at the time of Attica . They didn't like that sort of thing."

Were the problems over politics?

"Probably politics," Plimpton says. "I really don't know. As a matter of fact, Howard Dean's father, who was a sort of tyrannical figure at the Maidstone, was a staunch Republican. I think he disliked my choice of friends. He was a man with sort of a stump leg who deeply wanted to be of the Maidstone. Oddly, the son wants to be president of the United States."

Silver-thatched society figure Plimpton, who celebrates 50 years as editor of the Paris Review on Oct. 14 at Cipriani 42nd Street, says he tried to respond to the rumors about his exclusion:

"I said, 'That wasn't a midget. That was a member of the Clyde Beatty Circus, a flyer. She and her husband had never played tennis before. So I took them to the upper courts. The flyer was very small. You have to be small to be a flyer . . . He has a big tattoo on his bicep. I was a member of that troupe, the Flying Apollos, for a month when I traveled with the circus." ....
