The Pope's Funeral
With the exception of funerals, weddings, and christenings, I have not been to a church service in 20 years. I must admit that I'm overwhelmed with emotion. What a great man.

Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 03:27 AM by fortyfeetunder
when he was on the East Coast celebrating an outdoor mass in the fall of 1979, watching this funeral is a rather profound moment.

I'm not Catholic but is very majestic yet also very moving. I'm a history buff so I am very interested in the ritual and traditions that go back hundreds of years, I wouldn't miss it for anything.

He could not have traveled as he did on the last trip. I mean I read they even stopped trains and river travel on that last trip. That church is one you never for get by the way.

me greatly. I hadn't realized how profoundly John Paul II had affected so many people from around the world. I'm truly impressed at the wide range of dignitaries, both political and religious, that reflect the modern world.

It takes a great individual, a person with vast personal integrity, to pull this variety of worldviews into a single event.

Note: I had to exercise the use of ignore for the first time -- some people simply lack all manners.

46. The most exciting/chilling/hopeful part of it for me was at the end...
...when the massive crowd kept applauding and yelled "Gian Paolo! Gian Paolo! Gian Paolo!" as the giant bells in St. Peter's pealed! With all those "heads of state" there--yet the crowd yelled for a man of faith and peace. And it went on and on and on! The world, begging God for leadership such as this, rather than what we all have.

I am listening to an Italian reporter interview a couple of Americans, children of Jewish and R Catholic parents--they found the reaching out of this Pope to those of other faiths and all the nations the most compelling. To me, this is a picture of the God I worship.

21. For a church...
...that has always been known for beautiful and often majestic ceremony and tradition, they have really outdone themselves for this occasion, as befitting one so beloved and revered the world over.

I'm reminded how much I loved the Latin Mass. The Mass in English, rock Masses, folk Masses, so-called "echumenical" masses were supposed to make Mass more "relevant". Speaking only for myself, they didn't. There is something about the old Mass, barely changed over two thousand years, that is uniquely moving to me. I'm loving this.

23. Since mystery is at the heart of the Catholic ritual --
perhaps, Latin is necessary as few actually understand it as a spoken language.

35. The Missals translated everything
They are books that show the "script" for each day's Mass. The "framework" is the same every day, other bits change according to the Church calendar.

In the old days, the Latin was printed on the left-hand page & the English translation on the right, giving a fine introduction to an ancient language. You could even "read ahead" if things got a bit boring. Besides, the priests were faced away from the congregation & often mumbled; they would have been hard to understand, even speaking English.

The sermons were always in English. Unless your parish spoke Spanish, French (for the creoles in Frenchtown), Czech, Polish or Vietnamese.

39. Give it a rest already.
You hate religion. We know that. We know it because you remind us about a hundred times every day. Fine. That's your prerogative, but don't flatter yourself by thinking that your opinion on the subject matters any more than anyone else's, and try to have some common courtesy just this once for those for whom this is a meaningful event.

31. It's too bad that the Nobel Peace Prize can't be given
posthumously -- as he is as deserving of it as the Dalai Lama. He accomplished a great good during his lifetime. All of these people didn't show up just cus he was the Pope -- they showed up for the man who was the Pope and how he conducted himself.

36. It was quite a spectacle, wasn't it?
I've always been fascinated by state funerals - the traditions and pomp of it all. However, the song they were singing (in which they name a saint, and then sing "pray for him" in Latin) is major earworm - I can't get it out of my head!

41. I just caught the tail end...
...after the funeral proper was over. It went something like this:

"There sure are a lot of people here."

"Yes, there sure are a lot of people."

"What do you think those people might be feeling?"

"I don't know. Perhaps they're sad and happy all at the same time."

"Here's a short video of what happened earlier."

"There sure are a lot of people here."

"I think maybe some of those people might be starting to leave."

"There are certainly a lot of people here."
