Our street corner . . .

We’ve been picking up a few new people along lately, and the traffic is distinctly more supportive than it was, but I was particularly pleased this weekend when the most perfect little street urchins I’ve ever seen came up and talked to me(!) for about 15 minutes.

They came over to me, across the intersection diagonally, just to make a statement I guess, on their crazy looking bicycles with the little tiny wheels and big handle bars. They said “Wha chew hoedn tha sign fo?”

There were 3 of them, pre-teens: one real black and kind of roly-poly, with one of those big ultra white smiles; another, café au lait, slender and sort of serious, he did most of the talking, and the third was a little skinny guy with big hair, he was a little tough guy. They were a little skeptical of my spiel, but I was flattered that they hung around me for a while, riding in circles sometimes. We talked about war, and then they went tearing off on those bicycles. I was very impressed. I will never forget them.
