Efficiency of Ceiling Fans Under Debate - We Got Em Now!!!!
By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The efficiency of ceiling fans may not be at the center of the country's energy debate, given record high gasoline prices. Yet the issue has become a focus of critics, including congressional Democrats, who complain Congress is not doing enough to address conservation as part of a broad energy bill.

1. I have a ceiling fan in my bedroom...
And I have noticed a severe spike in my bills when I use it in the summer. I never put 2 and 2 together.

Thanks for this. Might be time to by a more efficient box fan for the bedroom.

2. Ceiling Fan vs. Air Conditioning No contest the fan can cool
less expensively than air conditioning.
We have them in every room in the house and rarely turn on Air. But we also live near the iceberg Lake Erie.

3. Depends on factors
It's mostly the lights burning up energy, but also the curve of the blades, the climate, etc.

But the overall point about conservation in the energy bill is so important.

6. Living on the coast here, air conditioning is a luxury and most
of us, of the proletariat, have ceiling fans for the few hot weeks we get here.

Another cooling tip.

Plant shade trees on the two side of your house that are the sunniest in the middle of the day. The bonus is that you get to plant all those neat shade loving plants iike Hostas and Cyclamens under them. I have noticed up to ten degrees in coolness in shady areas vs. sunny areas.

People who live in the desert and plant Manzanita and other drought tolerant shade trees can also reduce their air conditioning use with shade.
