2. Yup. All the more reason to buy locally grown meat and produce.
And also start paying attention to when certain foods are in season.

Eating out of season fruit imported from Chile is going to be murder on the wallet.

4. The problem is...
stores know they CAN get a higher price, so seasonal fruits are no longer even a bargain..

6. Well, yes, there are other market forces at work here.
But overall, produce that travelled 25 miles to reach you should cost less than produce that travelled 5000 miles.

And if my neighborhood mom-n-pop grocery store charges nearly the same price for both, I'll still get the locally grown stuff. Their profit margin will be higher, but it'll be local profit. And my food still has the other benefits of local growing (fresher, picked closer to ripeness, less bruising, trace amounts of local pollens, etc.)

7. Where was this restaurant, Manhattan?
That's a little high for breakfast, it should be GREAT for that price.

10. You do mean CA 91, right?
I-91 extends from New Haven, Conn. north to the Canadian border, through Mass. and Vt. but definitely not CA.

Although that would explain the pricey breakfast: having to pay off 3,000 miles of highway construction :-)

11. Yeppers, and that's just the beginning
You can start expecting all of your food to go up. Also expect that any item transported by truck to increase in price. This will trickle down into the service industry. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Just another reason to grow a garden, and become skilled in storing food. Canning, pickling, drying, all of these skills will save you money. Start now and you will be well practiced by the time that $100.00/barrel oil gets here.

Remember the day when $7.99 paid for a five course dinner at a classy restaurant?

Appetizer
Soup
Salad
Entree with vegetables and rolls
Dessert & coffee

Sniff.
