A Canadian's message to American progressives

I saw this comment from a Canadian on a progressive blog:

"Now you face an enormous task to turn things around, with sweat, toil and tears. But mainly, I think, it will take discipline on the left until the 2004 election - no more clever repartee about how corrupt or stupid all politicians are (implying it doesn't really matter who is elected), no more nitpicking about which democratic candidate said what three years ago (giving the public the impression that they all lie too), no more stupid single-issue arguments about which democrat supports blacks or women or gays or unions or the armed forces or Social Security or Medicare or the environment -- the 2004 election is not actually about any of those issues at all. Its the democratic future of America that is actually at stake. I'm Canadian, so I don't care whether the candidate is Dean or Kerry or Clark -- just get behind him and make sure he wins the Gore states plus 2."

I'll post the most important part again:

Good advice - we should all heed it.

George Bush must go for the sake of man kind. That should be goal # 1 here. We simply must "prioritize."

2. Yes, nicely said, and I agree, but

winning an election is more than all that. Money, advertising, endorsements, image, media all play roles (unfortunately). Dems have to be smart this time. It is very difficult to run against an incumbent, to beat the electoral college (weighted toward small, right-leaning states), and to dodge the dirty tricks and media manipulation of the rightwing. I hope we can do it. Things are starting to look a little promising.

5. I'm Canadian and I know where that person is coming from

We up here in Canada are feeling the effect of Bush's spitefulness because we didn't join his attack on Iraq...We have had trouble with trade and other issues....He's got us on his black list. I long for the days of Bill Clinton, who was a friend to Canada and the rest of the world, which Bush and his buddies have alienated....

6. Actually, there's a hell of a lot more at stake

than just the democratic future of America. The reign of this "president" has had disastrous consequences for the entire world -- treaties trashed, the Middle East destabilized, ozone/global warming worsening, economy perched on the edge of a huge disaster a la Japan or Argentina, etc., etc. Remember, when the U.S. sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold -- or worse. Bush* is Typhoid Mary on a global scale.
