The important difference between "pro life" dems and "pro choice" repubs
"Pro choice" repubs always vote to confirm "pro life" judges who are against the legal right to abortion, because they agree with them on so many other issues.

"Pro life" dems will confirm "pro choice" judges who support the legal right to abortion because they agree with them on so many other issues.

that's the big difference people forget.

Voting for a pro choice republican means very little, because when it comes to appointing the court, the vote the same as other repubs.

The converse is true for dems.

1. True
Even if we had a pro-choice Republican president he or she would probably have to appoint a lot of anti-abortion judges just to keep the anti-abortion Republicans off of the White House's back.

2. unfortunately that isn't always the case. Kucinich, for example

Has a zero rating from NARAL. He has voted in keeping with abortion rights only 10% of the time. Mark Foley, a Florida Republican, has an 80 rating from NARAL. There are a number of zero rated Democrats, including John Murtha and at least three other PA Democrats, while NARAL rates a number of Republicans between 20 and 80. Republicans Rodney P. Frelinghuysen of NJ and Charles Bass of NH both have 100 ratings.

You can check the ratings of your own representatives here.

Another point to keep in mind is that most of Bush's judicial appointments have received large majorities across party lines. The current battle is over only 10 appointments.

It would be nice if the world of politics were as simple as Republicans are evil and Democrats are good. It would save us from actually having to think about our political choices, but that is not the case. More Democrats defend abortion rights than Republicans do, but it does not break down absolutely along pary lines, at least according to NARAL.

3. The housed doesn't vote to confirm Judges
only the senate. I should have made that clearer in my post.

However, "pro choice" repubs like Collins, Snow, Chafee etc. aren't holding up any of these more extreme jurists form being confirmed, but "pro life" dems like Reid are,

That was my basic point.

4. in extreme cases, you're probably right
But not in the ordinary course of voting. And the House has passed a lot of legislation that restricts abortion rights. Judges aren't the only way the right works to undermine women's rights. And the Senate has already confirmed a good number of anti-abortion rights judges. We'll see how these next judge votes turn out. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the turncoat Dems, like the Nelsons, voting for them.
