How many Republicans ran for President in '96? |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 08:15 AM by underpants
In almost every discussion in the media (major actual networks, papers, and the ususal suspects) mention is made with guffaws at the number of Democrats who have thrown their hat in the ring. The underlying message here, sometimes stated, is that the Democrats are running amuck and that their message is diluted (perhaps). This of course is a much different world than it was in 1996 and the real message should be that obviously this administration is way off course and that Bush is vulnerable and has been for some time.
So how many Republicans threw their hats in in 1996?
BobDole Jack Kemp Gary Bauer Alan Keyes Phil Gramm (for a short period of time) Pat Buchanan Pat Robertson That guy who always wore flannel from Tennessee I believe (Lamar Alexander) Steve Forbes
That's 9 as I count them.
Can we include Perot in there? Have I missed someone? Included someone I shouldn't have?
EDITED for punctuality.

and Paul Begala know about this? (I would hope so!) They need to mention this because I am sick and tired of Tucker Carlson bringing up this issue on Crossfire!

way back in 88? I don't think he ran in 96 again.
Did a quick search --
need to add Richard Lugar (Senator of Indiana) and B-1 Bob Dornan (Congresscritter from Mars).
I don't think Jack Kemp ran in 96 though.
PS - In my search, I came across an article from the Alexander for prez campaign touting his strong 3rd place finish in Iowa (after Dole and Buchanon). Anyway, it was a press release that tried to read like a newspaper story. After touting Alexander, it summed up the rest of the results. The last paragraph said something like --On the Democratic side, supporters of President Clinton were working hard to stop the momentum of the Alexander camapaign while trying to get the president reelected.
I can just see Clinton's people in Iowa saying for god's sake people, we've got to stop Lamar!!

Thanks for the info but didn't Kemp run as well or was he picked to run as VP from outside of the field?
I totally edited this from its original form.

He was Dole's running mate in the general election, but he did not run in the primary.

15. Collins? Shellenberg? |
|
I vaguely remember Morry Taylor; he was a factory owner of some sort, right? But Collins and Shellenberg I'm totally unaware of. The size of the field of major candidates in the "out" party seems to correspond to some consistant function of supply and demand. In the 70s and 80s there'd be about 5-8 major players for an open nomination. In the 90s the range is 8-10. Market forces prevent more than that number jumping in, I suspect.
At least the Democratics' 10 have the paper creditials (Congress, governor or other high office), with the exception of Sharpton who, like Buchanan or Robertson, has the public notoriety of a long term activist-leader out in his community.

21. I remember Morry Taylor too |

He made tires I think.
I remember he got into one of the massive debates. I also remember Bob Dornan in a debate looking at a picture that one of the candidates was passing around. Don't remember what it was about.
Never heard of Shellenberg or Collins though.
USA Today did an article before the last election about all the announced candidates for president and there were about 250 of them who had done everything they needed to do to be "official" candidates for president.

Collins, Shellenberg or Taylor. They were not serious candidates. There are actually hundreds of candidates who run for president each year. You have to draw the line somewhere.
I would include Bob Dornan though. He was a serious candidate as a House member.

The list is from here. http://solstice.stardot.com/jefferson/campaign96/candidates/right/fed/And I stand by it. These were the ones who stood out. And were Republicans.

I guess Mr. Charles Collins stood out as a candidate to someone? Maybe his family.
I have never heard of him, so I did a Yahoo search.
I found primary returns with his name on it. They are from the 2000 primary from Ventura County. They have him listed as a Reform Party candidate. Will try to find some results from 1996. I'm interested in the guy now.
GEORGE W BUSH-REP...........62,520 31.8% AL GORE-DEM.................56,965 29.0% JOHN MCCAIN-REP.............52,969 26.9% BILL BRADLEY-DEM............13,905 7.1% ALAN KEYES-REP...............5,211 2.6% RALPH NADER-GRN..............1,849 0.9% HARRY BROWNE-LIB...............698 0.4% DONALD J TRUMP-RFM.............429 0.2% STEVE FORBES-REP...............368 0.2% GARY BAUER-REP.................275 0.1% ORRIN HATCH-REP................208 0.1% GEORGE D WEBER-RFM.............189 0.1% HOWARD PHILLIPS-AIP............180 0.1% LYNDON LAROUCHE-DEM............172 0.1% JOHN HAGELIN-NTL...............125 0.1% ROBERT BOWMAN-RFM...............83 0.0% JOEL KOVEL-GRN..................79 0.0% JOHN B ANDERSON-RFM.............60 0.0% KIP LEE-LIB.....................58 0.0% DAVE LYNN HOLLIST-LIB...........45 0.0% L NEIL SMITH-LIB................44 0.0% LARRY HINES-LIB.................39 0.0% CHARLES COLLINS-RFM.............13 0.0%
On edit - the guy obviously had some support. I found a listing of write-in votes for president in 1996 from the State of Maryland, and he got 11 votes, divided among four different counties.

14. Geez, take a look at that crew. |

You know, looking at that list, I don't recall any cannibalization among the ranks.
I guess the national party and the congressional republicans just sort of picked Dole.
I was awake in '96, maybe I was just ignoring them.
