bumper sticker: "I, too, got a Diebold cease and desist!"
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 01:26 PM by BevHarris
Because that's what it's coming too, folks. We'll be wearing these things like badges of honor and they will be displayed on the walls. As many cease and desists as tea leaves in the Boston Bay?

How's this for the new math:

1 Diebold cease and desist = appearance of same material on 10 new web sites

For those not familiar with the latest goings-on, their latest cease and desist objects to posting internal memos which prove that they have known for 10 years that their voting system is easy to tamper with.

Oh, and memos which prove they have knowingly used uncertified software in elections.

Oh, and memos which prove they lied in the R.F.P sales documents submitted to the states of Georgia and Ohio.

For some reason, they object to these memos (provided by Diebold employees) being posted on the web. And this, my friends, is one of the most insidious results of the privatization movement. Privatization is used to stifle scrutiny and dissent.

Bev

(If anyone wants to produce bumper stickers that say "I, too, got a Diebold cease & desist" I'll provide the link for purchase on blackboxvoting.org.)

1. How about hooking me up with the Diebold files so I can
display them on my website?

7. The underground railroad was overbooked yesterday
from what I hear. They are rebooking passengers now. I think anyone who asked for a ticket and was approved is getting info pretty soon.

Go to http://www.blackboxvoting.org to the activism forum -- there's a guy called Colonel Jessup (love the name; he's a Republican who has been following this for months!) who's been directing traffic on this, sign in, do a quick post and frankly, I'm not sure what happens next.

2. I'd change it around a bit
"I got a Diebold Cease & Desist, too!" sounds more straightforward. Sounds like good t-shirt material, too : )

4. Request the cease and desist letter, Trogl
This is important. Demand that your web host send you the cease and desist. Send a copy by email to me.

8. Bumper sticker is a bit vague, IMHO. How many folks know who Diebold is?
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 01:12 PM by w4rma
Not many. Somehow it would have to point out that Diebold builds unsecure voting machines and not just ATMs.

From a buisness standpoint, I seriously cannot understand why Diebold would risk their 10s of millions of dollars in contracts just because they don't want to print out ballots. This is one reason why I think some folks running that company are actively trying to steal elections (which will provide Diebold folks with a whole whole bunch more money if successful).

13. great quote
I also liked your comment "Privatization is used to stifle scrutiny and dissent". I have found that very true when our local government entered into a private/public partnership. The "bad guys" ran all the questionable stuff through the private part and said we couldn't look at the books.

10. Or maybe...
...Tell Diebold to Cease & Desist

"Privatization is used to stifle scrutiny and dissent." Absolutely. The keystone to the whole BBV effort appears to be the single federal court decision declaring all voting system software a trade secret. Overturn that decision and you cut the legs out from under them.

Anyone have any idea what kind of standing one would need to file such an appeal? Raising the money would be the next step, but I think that might be doable if we had the attorney, the standing, and the intention to do it. In the meantime though, bumperstickers and t-shirts can be potent public education tools in their own right.

And I'm brainstorming with some locals here about how we could set up a well publicized and very public demo of the GEMS hack in hopes that Diebold sues us.

Just the PR value would be priceless. Imagine the headline: Voting Machine Company Sues Locals for Demonstrating Voting Machines Can be Hacked. And then there is the discovery process during which we could force them to answer some very embarrassing questions.

Glad I am not hunkered down inside the Diebold fort right now wondering where all the natives came from all of a sudden and what pissed them off so bad.

12. Methinks Diebold is discovering that selling democracy
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 01:29 PM by BevHarris
differs greatly from selling ATM machines. :)

18. And one more kick - this is important
Diebold and others want the business badly because it's an unending gravy train for them. Annual SW licenses, Election setup services for every election.
