Give 'em Hell General
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 01:52 PM by OKNancy
In echoes of wartime President Harry S. Truman, someone shouted to Clark, "Give 'em hell, General," as Clark was shaking hands with the crowd. He pumped his fist, smiled and replied, "We're going to give them the truth, and they'll think it's hell."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24563-2003Sep17.html

Washington Post article about announcement.

PS....Sorry about one more Clark thread, I just can't help myself.

1. Oh boy...
Now we're going to have both Dean and Clark trying their best to sound like Harry Truman...! This is going to be one odd ride.

An interesting battle brewing : the core base vs. the "upper establishment" -- Right now I don't have any idea who will win.

2. I'm not so sure about your description
I would consider myself to be part of the core Democratic base. I'm very liberal. But I'm also going to back the guy who I think has the best chance of embarressing Bush.

That man is Clark.

19. The newspaper used the Truman line
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 02:31 PM by OKNancy
but I get your point. I do disagree about "the core base vs the upper establishment"

I'm for Clark and I consider myself a part of the base ( as I understand it) I'm one of those middle-aged women you see down at the Demo headquarters who staples the signs and calls people on the phone. I do the bean dinners and the pie suppers. I give what little money I can to my favorite(s). But you see, people like me at the BASE of the party, see the practical side of politics a lot more than some others. And for me here in Oklahoma, Clark is the one to get me excited. I will admit one big reason is because I think he can win. Getting electoral votes for a Democrat in Oklahoma will be very difficult. Clark has a chance of getting the Oklahoma electoral votes. Dean has zero chance.

Remember, it's the electoral college, stupid.

Edit: two stupid spelling errors

3. Ok, I keep hearing that the Gen. is a liberal.
I can't find anything on his domestic policy positions. On his website, that page is "under construction."

If he is still studying the issues, that's cool with me, but then he isn't a liberal -- at best a potential one.

Anyone got a link to this man's domestic policy positions that might justify the reference to him as a liberal?

8. Guess what
They've been removed.

But I do know he's a progressive on abortion rights, worker's unions, and the environment.

That's good enough for me.

12. The environment?

How do you know this? He said he believed global warming was happening. Big deal. I want to hear more from this guy. He seems to be a good man, a fine leader and some decent ideas, but he's more an idea than a real candidate at this point.

This is the thing that makes Clark tough...He has no core values that we know of. People with strong principled stands (especially Liberals) get bashed to hell and back. Right wingers hide their extremism and we don't nominate left-wingers anymore....No wonder this world is going into the shitter.

15. He's Said That 100 Years From Now
The only things that will matter is the environment and the Constitution. He's chairman of an alternative energy company (wave-electric motors for bikes).

13. True, But His Official Site Doesn't Have "On the Issues" Yet
Unless I missed it.

He's said he's developing position statements over the next couple of weeks.

Well, his positions read as mildly liberal, especially on economic issues. Sketchy, though.

OK, he did the Oxford tripos econ/politics/philosophy, a distinguished but not highly specialized program. I rate that better'n *Bush's Harvard MBA.

17. Rep. Rangel (D NY) said this:
"I have a personal problem with those who supported the war."

And then he endorsed Clark.

Wonder what Clark's view on the Iraq war might be?

20. he's a neo-liberal like Dean
and Clinton, so far.

I would say that Kucinich represents the base more than any other candidate.

18. I like General Clark alot
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 02:25 PM by Crewleader
and warm welcome to join other Good Democrats to show Bush the door, everyone of them are very good except the more conservative views of Lieberman but he's being himself and showing who he is so there's no surprise to us and you have to admire him for that, his honesty of his values on issues.

I truly like Dennis K for his great stand against NAFTA and putting working families first with health benefits and education for power for the poeple. He's compassionate and sincere and I believe unions really like what he has to say too.

Since our union is AFL-CIO I anxious to know who they will endorse.

I really like General Clark also, he brings the strength of being a four star general who has the knowledge and experience to know how to protect our country and to stand up against Bush as he likes to be the War Time President who seeks the patriotism vote with those who are really confused and think 9/11 is tied with Iraq.

General Clark spoke against the invasion of Iraq and I think he has alot to offer for he knows our country is stronger at peace then what we are involved with now. Plus he has the ability to bring friendships with other nations to work together for goals that will benefit relations to guide against terrorism and safety for all.

He speaks of the economy and knows the struggles families are having with no jobs, more lay offs and needing to take care of their families. I listen to him and I like what he had to say today...and knows what needs to be done and I particularly liked the his words as he finished his speech today..."It's Time To Move Out" just like a leader we need...time to take out the enemy George W. Bush and fight for Peace and Prosperity For All Americans!
