BushCo Iraq-9/11 link in old news items--can we collect here?
I am going to start combing old news items for evidence that BushCo DID state a connection between SH and 9/11 or contrived one or implied it so strongly that they might as well have said it outright. Can we let this thread be the central place where such links are posted?

For my first contribution, see this:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/09/04/september11/main520830.shtml">Plans for Iraq Attack Began on 9/11, from 9/4/02, in which Rumsfeld is noted "telling his aides (barely 5 hours after the 9/11 attacks) to come up with plans for striking Iraq — even though there was no evidence linking Saddam Hussein to the attacks."

<snip>

With the intelligence all pointing toward bin Laden, Rumsfeld ordered the military to begin working on strike plans. And at 2:40 p.m., the notes quote Rumsfeld as saying he wanted "best info fast. Judge whether good enough hit S.H." – meaning Saddam Hussein – "at same time. Not only UBL" – the initials used to identify Osama bin Laden.

Now, nearly one year later, there is still very little evidence Iraq was involved in the Sept. 11 attacks. But if these notes are accurate, that didn't matter to Rumsfeld.

"Go massive," the notes quote him as saying. "Sweep it all up. Things related and not."

</snip>

Notice nobody ever openly denied the connection back then. Not until now.

1. They hinted at it or insinuated it DAILY!
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 06:28 PM by glarius
After hinting at and insinuating for months, that Saddam was in on 9/11, Bush and his buddies are suddenly wide-eyed with innocense! "We don't believe he was in on 9/11! Whatever gave you that idea!"...They got their desired effect....persuading the American public and now they are pretending they didn't mean that at all....DISGUSTING

3. they are right they never said it.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/08/20020826.html

"In the face of such a threat, we must proceed with care, deliberation, and consultation with our allies. I know our president very well. I've worked beside him as he directed our response to the events of 9/11. I know that he will proceed cautiously and deliberately to consider all possible options to deal with the threat that an Iraq ruled by Saddam Hussein represents. And I am confident that he will, as he has said he would, consult widely with the Congress and with our friends and allies before deciding upon a course of action. He welcomes the debate that has now been joined here at home, and he has made it clear to his national security team that he wants us to participate fully in the hearings that will be held in Congress next month on this vitally important issue. "Speaking January 30 to the 30th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Arlington, Virginia, Cheney recalled the list of chemical and biological weapons-related material the United Nations believes is in Iraq, and warned that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein "could decide secretly to provide weapons of mass destruction to terrorists for use against us.""

4. I wonder if saddam can get this over turned now.
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/special/sept11/1900897

"NEW YORK -- A federal judge Wednesday ordered Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and others to pay nearly $104 million to the families of two Sept. 11 victims, saying there is evidence -- though meager -- that Iraq had a hand in the terrorist attacks. "

6. This?
http://edition.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/01/29/sprj.irq.bush.iraq/

"He is a danger not only to countries in the region but, as I explained last night, because of his al Qaeda connections, because of his history, he is a danger to Americans," Bush said, referring to Tuesday's State of the Union address. "And we're going to deal with him. We're going to deal with him before it's too late."

---more---

The Bush administration has been trying for months to link Iraq with al Qaeda, the organization that coordinated the September 11, 2001, attacks that claimed about 3,000 lives. Its leader, Osama bin Laden, has been the subject of a extended manhunt.

Bush said Wednesday that Saddam could use al Qaeda as a "forward army" that could attack the United States with weapons of mass destruction "and never leave a fingerprint behind."

8. Speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln
Bush said

The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on
terror that began on September the 11th, 2001
and still goes on.

And

We have removed an ally of Al Qaida and cut off
a source of terrorist funding.

It surely gives one the impression that we bombed Iraq because of 9/11. Even if they never actually said Hussein did 9/11, they ALL spoke in ways that suggested it. Logically, how else could so many Americans think Hussein did it?--they couldn't all come to that conclusion independently.

full text of speech at cnn.com/2003/US/05/01/bush.transcript/

(I don't know how to set up links--I'm a computer dinosaur.)
