The "Goring" of Clark has begun - Let's nip it in the bud this time!

Whichever candidate you support - this is an important opportunity to show the media we are too well-informed now to tolerate any more reporters lying.

We all know that the "Gore exaggerates" lie was created and fanned by the media, and that it hurt his standing among some people. (Gore never implied he invented the internet or that he was the inspiration for a character out of Love Story - but lots of people thought he did imply these things, because the media falsely claimed that he did.)

Well, now the media is at it again - already trying to plant the idea of Clark as a liar. This time, it's conservative columnist George F. Will who erroneously claimed in a recent column that Clark told a lie. The column appeared in the Washington Post, and it has been syndicated in many other papers as well.

In his article, George F. Will lies twice: First, he reorders Clark's earlier quotes from Meet The Press (about getting calls asking him to link 9/11 to Iraq) to take them out of context and then call Clark "deranged." Then, in response to Clark's statement that one of the calls came from "a Middle East think tank in Canada", George F. Will falsely states that there are no Middle Eastern think tanks in Canada - when in fact there are several (which anyone can verify by googling).

We need to let the media know that we won't tolerate them telling lies in order to paint an honest candidate as a liar.

I think a few phone calls and emails to the Washington Post might go a long way towards showing that We the People aren't going to put up with this kind of stuff anymore. Whether you speak to a human being or just leave a voicemail, trust me, you will have an impact. Tell the Washington Post that you know George F. Will was lying, and respectfully request a retraction or correction. If enough people do this, they WILL get the message.

Here's some people you can contact at the Washington Post:

Bo Jones, Publisher, jonesb@washpost.com, 202.334.6505

Fred Hyatt, Editorial Editor, 202.334.7471

Mike Getlter, Ombudsman, 202.334.7582

Kim Oster, osterkm@washpost.com, who works for...

Alan Shearer, Editorial Director/General Manager, Washington Post Writers' Group, 800.879.9794

Here's some bloggers who are covering George F. Will's lie:

1. Clark is one of the people Bush is afraid of.
He also seems pretty frightened about a Kucinich candidacy.

"He also seems pretty frightened about a Kucinich candidacy."

What's it, a big-ears contest?

You know as much as I admire Kucinich for standing up for his principles and saying some things I really like, I know he's not going to even come close to winning.

He seems like a great guy and has some good ideas. However, they guy also has some pretty lofty ideals. As much as I'd like to see all the profit taken out of healthcare, I don't see that happening for a long time. Plus, I don't think you should necessarily take all the profit out of healthcare - I'd rather just not see a lot of the needless overhead.

We need someone who will destroy chimpy when it comes to the vote, and Kucinich just can't generate that.

4. It will be so easily debunked....

with the video and the transcript. But coming in the week when the WH is backtracking over the Saddham 9/11 connection has me smiling. Clark lied? Oh, let me hold my side. Like Dick Morris said, Bush is running up a down escalator. I wonder how my friends feel? The ones who have been asserting that Saddham has been in bed with Osama & Co.

If this is all the R's have, it's going to be too easy. It will never stick for an entire year until the election. The R's attack is peaking too early.

5. Our outrage will not be enough
And it should not be about just Clark.
I have been watching the news channels the last few days and I think I see the pattern that the political strategist are working on.
Tie Clinton and Clark together. Speculate whether Clinton is behind this so that Hillary can be president.
Turn Clark against the front runner Dean and dissolution all of his supporters with the already planted idea that this is a DNC plot to scuttle their man.
With that done It leaves Kerry, Kusinich, and Lieberman.
No problem there Kerry could piss off the liberals in the party real easy if he accepts the military stance that he thinks he must do to get the disaffected Clark vote. (and the liberals may feel so pissed that they do not vote at all or vote green just like the Deanies) That leaves Leiberman to get the nomination by virtue of his name recognition.
Bingo, a winner for Bush.

15. I agree with your assertion
I think the Rwingers think that Clark's ties to Hillary and Bill Clinton will be devisive and will try to spin it all to hell that Clark is Bill's puppet. The RW hate the Clintons and this can set them in attack mode hell. We need to learn how to laugh at their attacks and attack shrub's policies with vigor and present Clarks policies with positive strength. That will appeal to most Americans. Let the RW take the low road on attacks. We need to call them on it calmly without rancor and use humor anyway possible.

6. George Will is Deranged
He's off his rocker and is a pompous twit to boot. He's too intellectual to mean much to your average freeper though, so just ignore him.

8. Doesn't matter which candidate you support
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 10:00 PM by scottxyz
I'm not sure yet if I'm a Clarkie or a Deanie or a Kucinichie - but I definitely don't like it when the right-wing takes it upon themselves to slander ANY candidate.

The media isn't all that tough - the main reason the media is such a mess is because they think they're giving the people what they want.

Let the media know that we want the truth, not lies. Spend 10 cents for long distance and call the Washington Post. If they come in tomorrow and hear a hundred voicemails on their phones showing that we know they're lying - you better believe they'll print a retraction, and they'll tell George F. Will he can't get away with lying anymore.

We're smart because we're on the web - the next step is to let the media KNOW how smart we are now. No matter which candidate you support, if we can get the media to stop lying to our faces, we're guaranteed to get a much better President next time around.

11. Good Post
I agree we have to demand the truth no matter who the candidate is.

And I agree we have the advantage of the internet, esp DU this time. I feel this is a place to seek information I've seen before. Some DU'er always comes through.

The Internet! Thanks Al Gore! :)

9. this is probably hopeless
they have been laying out there watching, waiting, taking notes and doing research for months while they were waiting for the real start of the political season (fall).

Unfortunately for Clark, he has given them great cannon fodder to point at him. We'll see how good his military skills are in dealing with the risks of a late but, not too late to matter, entry.

13. George Who? Yawn.
Everyone in Washington knows that Will is close to the Bushes. George and Laura even go to the Will home for dinner. I don't think anybody considers him anything but anal anymore.
