Poll question: Clark is a retired general - How does this affect your view of him
Edited on Thu Sep-18-03 12:42 AM by disgruntella
Maybe not well-worded here (but I can excuse it by saying it was a 700 Club thing). I am actually looking for some subtletly in the response though.

Edited to ADD the last choice.
And editing AGAIN to say: I intended "support" to mean "support as a potential candidate" -- not that you would definitely vote Clark in the primaries. I don't expect everyone to have made that decision yet.

1. How about
I support him but the fact that he "is" a general bothers me.

3. I'd support him anyway
But being a general doesn't hurt. He graduated at the top of his class at West Point, former supreme commander of NATO, served with honor in Vietnam, among many others.

I can't wait to see how this stands up to Dubya. :)

A man who went AWOL and a man who served with honor. Which would you choose?

4. I need another choice
I haven't settled on a candidate. It's too early. But I personally don't care one way or the other that he is a General.

7. I guess I meant support in general -
- not "support" as in "I will vote for him in the primaries"

I am going to edit the post again (these polls are hard!)

5. I haven't chosen a candidate yet. I need more information...
However, the fact that General Clark made a career out of guarding our democracy is a strong checkmark in his favor the same way Kerry's service is to Kerry's campaign, and the other veterans running. Excuse me for not knowing which others are veterans, there's alot of info coming in and I can't keep up.

The ability to put your own personal financial and social gain aside to serve the populace is definite characteristic that I admire.

21. I'm becoming more pro-Clark, but...
He hasn't exactly put his "own personal financial and social gain aside" since leaving the service. After ending his 34 year career, he's done real good for himself in the business world. To me, that's a bigger plus than minus, but some of yall lefties need to know his career isn't entirely about being a bureaucrat with a gun.

9. Where can I find out more about this Clark, of whom you speak?
Sadly, no one here seems to want to discuss Clark.

18. Here are some links
Edited on Thu Sep-18-03 01:34 AM by juliemoo
The first is for an article Michael Moore wrote about him on his website:
http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/message/index.php?messageDate=2003-09-12

And this one is for his personal website:
http://www.americansforclark.com/

And this one talks about his stance on different issues:
http://meetclark.com/faq/

I find him a very intriguing candidate. At least the right-wingers can't complain that he hasn't done his service to our country. I support candidates based on their stance on the issues but being a general (and a Rhodes scholar) certainly can't hurt.

13. The good doctor has an office in Vermont.
I've heard that he helped to make it a better place. That's what I want, a better place.

14. that's cool
I'm not anti-Dean, I'd support him as a Democratic candidate - but on a completely subjective level, I gotta say: the phrase "the good doctor" completely turns me off. That's one gal's opinion, YMMV.

16. Poor choice of words..agreed.
It's early to choose yet. I don't know that I like Dean as much as the idea of Dean. The DLC/DNC doesn't like Dean. He has no associations on the "HILL". He's a dark horse, a maverick and was a complete unknown until recently. On the surface he seems to be a choice from business as usual. I've a mental picture of Wellstone with a mean streak. I hope he walks or drives whereever he goes.

19. Thanks for the reply
I was afraid it might be taken as a flame on Dean; it really wasn't intended as such, just a personal "twitch" of mine (even though I was a bit sarcastic in my first response. I guess I wasn't aware that Dean was the *only* canidate w/o DC ties). Anyway, I appreciate how Dean has added a lot of fire to the race and mobilized voters. Not my first choice, but up there.

15. Is it true he provided the tanks and soldiers to kill everyone at Waco?
I heard he was in charge of Ft Hood at the time. If so, blech. He's got blood on his hands from that murderous debacle.

22. I support all Democratic candidates but being a general is a minus in
my books. I served in the military and have a good idea about generals and it isn't pleasant. However if he is the nominee I will hold my nose and vote for him.
