If I hear the word "support" one more damn time. . .
I'm gonna hurl. What's it mean, anyway? Remember the "support our troops" stuff? Like SAYING it actually meant something? ("Dear Mom, I was feeling really bad about getting shot at and having buddies killed and maimed and only eating once a day and not having enough water and living in a broiler, but then when you told me about all the yard signs, WOW, that made all the difference and I could stay here forever!")

I hope like hell that our "support" for Dem candidates ain't as empty as all of that. As nice as it is, just being "for" a candidate, without backing it up, ain't gonna cut it.

Talking and posting is cheap. Frankly, unless you are prepared to give time, energy, and/or money (preferably all three) you've got a super-inflated sense of your own importance and the value of your "support".

So if you've been grandly announcing who you "support" and that's it, get off your ass and DO something. REALLY support your candidate, no matter who it is. (Even - shudder - Lieberman)

Sorry for the rant, guess I'm cranky tonight.

eileen from OH (who's done all three, btw)

1. I agree, and support you for saying that
I have a feeling you will see a lot of replies with the word "support" in them.

But you are exactly right.

Saying "I support ______" is just like saying "I support the troops". Either do something about it, or shut up about it. Talk is cheap.

Granted, many people here are very active in sup- er, backing - their candidates and I don't want to cheapen their efforts.

But you don't sup- um, boost - your candidate by trashing all the others.

4. I agree Eileen.
Two days ago I sent the following rant out to my little self-selected "activist" group. I am now certain that they are all certain that I am insane.

"Here's what I think folks: If you don't want perpetual war, if you don't want a country sharply divided into haves and have-nots, if you want our country to avoid a debt-ridden, Argentina-like, IMF-interventioned meltdown, if you want your vote counted, if you want your environment protected, if you want your economy to wean itself from oil and gas before we are figuratively baked to a crisp on our warming planet, if you want political decisions to be made in the best interest of its citizens rather than its corporations and the wealthy who own them, it is NOT ENOUGH JUST TO VOTE DEMOCRATIC NEXT YEAR. IT JUST ISN'T. YOU NEED TO ACTIVATE. CALL AND WRITE LETTERS TO YOUR CONGRESSPEOPLE. GET THE WORD OUT. CHALLENGE THE INDEPENDENTS AND MODERATE REPUBLICANS ON THEIR VIEWS. PUT A BUMPER STICKER (OR TWO OR THREE) ON YOUR CAR. Because just going into that voting booth and voting Democratic just isn't going to cut it this time around."

7. Bravo! But may I add. . .
You also have to GIVE MONEY to your candidates. I'd rather have a root canal than ask people to give money but anyone that doesn't think it makes a difference is sadly mistaken. We HAVE TO DONATE. Period. Dean's campaign has proven that it doesn't matter the amount if enough people will do it. Give, give, GIVE. It's an investment in the country.
