Abstinence speaker pushed religion in school, dad charges
By GAIL SCHONTZLER, Chronicle Staff Writer
Bozeman,Montana

An irate father is demanding that Bozeman High School present students with a rebuttal to what he called "extremely biased religious dogma" delivered by an assembly speaker who warned teens against the dangers of drugs, drinking and premarital sex.

Tom Wells, a Bozeman attorney and father of a ninth-grader, told the School Board on Monday night that he was appalled by the "thinly veiled ministry" and "misinformation" presented the week before by speaker Tina Marie Holewinski.

Holewinski, 27, of Hollywood, Calif., a full-time speaker with an organization called True Lies, defended her talk Tuesday as full of "hard-core facts" that could save teenagers' lives.

~snip~

Wells demanded the school give equal time to rebut the "misinformation" his son heard: that condoms lead to cancer, that birth control pills are only 20 percent effective, that sexually transmitted diseases are spread by skin contact alone, that third-trimester fetuses can be aborted, that video games lead to homicide, that human papilloma virus can be transferred through condoms and that teens can achieve "second virginity" through abstinence.

~snip~

118. Depends...
First you have to suspend disbelief. Then you have to take statistics and flip them around. Then all you need to do is spout misinformation about how condoms cause hunger in third world countries and the pill is at fault for terrorism, it'll take about a day.

I think it works for the True Lies crowd.

4. I think all the disinformation is disgusting
And they think this is going to help the kids stay away from sex? They're REALLY fooling themselves. This doesn't help anything at all. What if someone gets an STD but they don't know it until it's too late? What if they're so afraid of condoms but still have sex and they get pregnant or something worse? And what if they get rid of abortion's and then you'll have tons of fifteen year old girls raising their own children and possibly without that baby's father.

16. This woman obviously has a serious problem
First, the irony of her referring to her lecture as being full of "hardcore facts" isn't lost on me. Sends warning flags this is a sexually repressed individual who probably has all kinds of seedy stuff going on under cover.

What you stated above is true, but requires an exercise in reason, obviously something this Ann Coulter protege does not have the capacity for.

61. Not only raising kids...
as single moms, but having complications for their kids like syphilis, gonorrhea, HPV, or any number of other diseases that we've been able to reduce through education.

Now we're going to have women giving birth to babies who are blind, deaf, born with AIDS, or have any number of other birth defects due to sexually-transmitted diseases.

These people are unbelievable. Parents, for God's sakes, give your kids the information yourselves. The school system sure isn't going to help.

Tina's PHOTO PAGE - http://www.truelies.org/Holewinski_Photo_Page.htm#loaderdone

Bio:
She's a 100% Polish, 100% blond farm girl - Gone Hollywood! Tina went from baling hay and milking cows to working as an actress/emcee in the big city. While attaining her BA in film and TV broadcasting, from California State University - Los Angeles, she started working in feature films and television shows. During this time, Tina realized - first hand - how the media twists the truth. Her involvement as a contestant in the preliminary Miss America pageant sparked her interest in educating society on what today's media is calling "harmless entertainment". As a National Speakers Association member, she frequently shares the truth with her fellow cast and crew members, models, actors, and especially with the youth and parents across America.

Tina has experience as an actress, narrator, spokes model, host, reporter, author, and emcee. She was a National Trainer for Aral Cosmetics, the emcee for Limited Too's "Passion for Fashion" national tour, a reporter for the TV Guide Awards and the Wings Celebrity Classics, and an award presenter at the Crystal and Lucy Awards for Women In Film. You might have seen her on "Young and the Restless", "Lizzie McGuire", the ABC special "Domino Day", "Constantine", and "Little Black Book", just to name a few. In addition, she was recently a guest on Si TV's "Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner ", where she exemplified the importance of protecting the sanctity of marriage. Tina has also opened for the bands Poverty, Apologetix, and Skillet and was a contributing writer in the book, "Fifty". After seven years of Hollywood experience, Tina is taking the truth to the streets of America to spread her message on how the media is killing this generation.

When Tina's not speaking, you'll find her mowing down some steak and baked potato, traveling, drumming, scuba diving, doing photography, cooking (look for the smoke) and reading a book on how to find the love of her life. Tina loves life and yearns to inspire the young minds of America! She will EXPOSE, EDUCATE and ENLIGHTEN! The True Lies presentation, will open your eyes, ears and heart and will challenge you to live to your fullest potential!

59. Two things jump out at me
1. She is "keeping her eyes open for a man"
2. She was on the Young and the Restless

So, how does she expect to find herself a man if she keeps on talking about all of these "naughty" topics? I mean, really.

Also, she was a on a soap opera? What is pure and innocent and virginal about soaps?

This woman is a bit crazy.

119. and!!
She worked with the Apologetix! have you guys heard them? they're Christian parody - as in, they take classic rock and change the lyrics into Christian messages. And they're BAAD. My buddies and I write our own, inspired by them, and ours are much better. Then again, we have a sense of irony.

you can listen to any of their stuff at www.apologetix.com, and it's so incredibly crap that it almost comes out the other end as brilliant. I mean, 'Bethlehemian Rhapsody'? and it's actually about David and Goliath, which has nothing to do with Bethlehem.

anyway, check it out if you want a laugh, or need to vomit.

If they're that stupid, let then keep voting for the morons who are stealing them blind and condemning them to a lifetime of ignorance.

What else do these people have except lies and superstition? This is all they have to work with because all the facts point in the opposite direction. The problem is, they create an entire, self-sustaining population of morons that believe this horse-hockey! There are some VERY stupid people in this country, :silly: and sometimes I think I've met every one of them.

About the Founder...
Phil Chalmers founded True Lies in 1984, and has been researching youth culture and speaking to teens and youth workers since 1985. Phil has met many teen idols and celebrities, interacting with people like Metallica, Two Live Crew, The Geto Boys, N Sync, Insane Clown Posse, GWAR, and many, many more. He has appeared on numerous media outlets like the Howard Stern Show and the Montel Williams Show. He has written numerous books, and written a few videos as well, including True Lies.

He expanded to a speaking team in 2002, and his current project is a youth conference tour and a book and television show on teen killers.

Phil spends his time writing, speaking, and traveling with his wife Barb and son 16-year-old son Phillip. He love cars and trucks, and his current ride is his Hummer H2. He enjoys working out, auto racing, golf, his boxer dogs, spending time with his family, and cheering for Jeff Gordon and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is addicted to PS2, and enjoys working with the police department as the chaplain.

In the end, Phil has dedicated his life to teens, and saving as many young people as he can, until his time runs out. His life saying is “Do one thing, and do it really, really good.” He knows how to communicate with teens, in their language, and knows how to reach them with truth, which is his life calling. He currently is the speaker on his youth conference tour, which are day-long Saturday conferences appearing in 40 cities nationwide.

while they are spreading STDs. Why bother using the pill if you're probably going to get pregnant anyway?

When these crispy fried twits are dealing with their children having children, or having to treat an STD on little JR do you think a light will go on? Nah, me either.

22. How can they say this with a straight face?
How can these people get up there and tell out and out lies with a straight face? Isn't this a major contradiction of their supposed values? I'm sure they justify it in their minds by telling themselves they're somehow "saving" these kids, but all they're doing is adding to the confusion about sex that leads to unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

I would ask if they have so sense of shame, but it's obvious that they do not. Hopefully, people will start to put two and two together and ask themselves, if this guy will tell a kid that a condom causes cancer, what kind of lies will he tell me?

23. Look, it's obvious what this woman is all about
she's an actress and she's found a gig. If she had been successful in Hollywood, she wouldn't be pushing the Bushian agenda. It's a job. She's taken the Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Dr. Laura, etc. route. Rush is a manufactured entity. A program director needed to fill a time slot and created Rush. The same with the rest. They follow the money. Who knows what they really believe? They certainly don't practice what they preach. Coulter talks the traditional female route but she doesn't live it. Dr. Laura gives advice but her life has been one of selfishness, adultery, and isolation. Newt is the antithesis of his family values blather. So are Rush and O'Reilly. They don't really believe the stuff they rant about...they're pitchmen (and women). That's it. They're all about the money.
This woman has no background to preach to others. She just makes stuff up. Same as O'Reilly and Rush. Most of her audience doesn't know the difference.
Her bio is one of desperation and wanna be-ism. She's Kato Kaolin and this True Lies group is her OJ. A soft place for a desperate person to land. That's it. Tell her the next paycheck comes from Satan worshippers and she'll pull on a robe and paint a pentagram on her forehead.

98. What a freak, "the next Julia Roberts"....
god has other, more simplistic, idiotic plans for you I guess. :eyes:

What next... I went from baling hay, picking rocks, line-dancing, beating up my two younger brothers, making my daily bike rides to the nearby cheese factory (only to eat half the cheese on the way back home) to working on Hollywood movie sets. I love working in film/tv and volunteering at my home church, the Oasis. However, i recently discovered that God has a much bigger plan for my life, than to be the next Julia Roberts. I want to encourage the youth to live to their fullest potential. To not have to fall prey to what Hollywood produces on a daily basis. Here's to God in Hollywood...I'm ready to entertain, enlighten, encourage...

With this in mind, i do put my love life on the back burner. Nevertheless, i still think about my next chapter in life. Where I'd like to live someday. What kind of house I'd like to build, what type of person I'd love to wake up next to every day for the rest of my life. You know, those easy to answer questions. Then i realize, if i'm with the right person, the first two issues wouldn't make any difference. Like i always tell my friends, "I'd rather be with a great guy in a rusty pick up truck, than a jerk in a BMW." My main focus, however, is what purpose i need to fulfill while on this earth for such a short amount of time. Check out www.TRUELIES.com for the mission i'm currently working on :)

What I know for sure is that every moment is a gift from God. We are so fortunate to have FREEDOM to go after our dreams, to be able to laugh, cry, live and die. I pray that all of you reading this will find your purpose in life and live it to the fullest.

Thank god george bush has given us the right to laugh, cry, live and DIE? Freedom to DIE? :wtf: is this bimbo talking about? I think she's got a big chunk of cheese wedged in between her ears. :banghead:

32. Okay...
... is "human papilloma virus can be transferred through condoms" true? No. The emphasis is on telling lies as if they are the truth. The fact that some small bits of truth (yes, they can be spread from areas not covered by a condom) are mixed in with the lies doesn't change the fact that the purpose of making such statements is to discourage condom use, and to scare kids into a) not using condoms and b) discouraging all sexual contact in the advocacy of abstinence, which, according to recent studies, is actually contributing to the spread of STDs in the teenage population.

Telling a tiny truth in service of a big lie isn't to be applauded. We have an entire government hard at work doing the same thing.

Cheers.

33. And do you know that RW fundies oppose new HPV vaccine?
In the US, for instance, religious groups are gearing up to oppose vaccination, despite a survey showing 80 per cent of parents favor vaccinating their daughters. "Abstinence is the best way to prevent HPV," says Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council, a leading Christian lobby group that has made much of the fact that, because it can spread by skin contact, condoms are not as effective against HPV as they are against other viruses such as HIV. "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex," Maher claims, though it is arguable how many young women have even heard of the virus.

43. Condoms Can't Prevent the Spread of HPV, Which Does Cause Cancer
However, there is a vaccine that can prevent HPV infections. Guess who's against it?

http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20050530&s=pollitt

subject to debate by Katha Pollitt

Virginity or Death!

Imagine a vaccine that would protect women from a serious gynecological cancer. Wouldn't that be great? Well, both Merck and GlaxoSmithKline recently announced that they have conducted successful trials of vaccines that protect against the human papilloma virus. HPV is not only an incredibly widespread sexually transmitted infection but is responsible for at least 70 percent of cases of cervical cancer, which is diagnosed in 10,000 American women a year and kills 4,000. Wonderful, you are probably thinking, all we need to do is vaccinate girls (and boys too for good measure) before they become sexually active, around puberty, and HPV--and, in thirty or forty years, seven in ten cases of cervical cancer--goes poof. Not so fast: We're living in God's country now. The Christian right doesn't like the sound of this vaccine at all. "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful," Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council told the British magazine New Scientist, "because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex." Raise your hand if you think that what is keeping girls virgins now is the threat of getting cervical cancer when they are 60 from a disease they've probably never heard of.

I remember when people rolled their eyeballs if you suggested that opposition to abortion was less about "life" than about sex, especially sex for women. You have to admit that thesis is looking pretty solid these days. No matter what the consequences of sex--pregnancy, disease, death--abstinence for singles is the only answer. Just as it's better for gays to get AIDS than use condoms, it's better for a woman to get cancer than have sex before marriage. It's honor killing on the installment plan.

Christian conservatives have a special reason to be less than thrilled about the HPV vaccine. Although not as famous as chlamydia or herpes, HPV has the distinction of not being preventable by condoms. It's Exhibit A in those gory high school slide shows that try to scare kids away from sex, and it is also useful for undermining the case for rubbers generally--why bother when you could get HPV anyway? In 2000, Congressman (now Senator) Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, who used to give gruesome lectures on HPV for young Congressional aides, even used HPV to propose warning labels on condoms. With HPV potentially eliminated, the antisex brigade will lose a card it has regarded as a trump unless it can persuade parents that vaccinating their daughters will turn them into tramps, and that sex today is worse than cancer tomorrow. According to New Scientist, 80 percent of parents want the vaccine for their daughters--but their priests and pastors haven't worked them over yet.

What is it with these right-wing Christians? Faced with a choice between sex and death, they choose death every time. No sex ed or contraception for teens, no sex for the unwed, no condoms for gays, no abortion for anyone--even for that poor 13-year-old pregnant girl in a group home in Florida. I would really like to hear the persuasive argument that this middle-schooler with no home and no family would have been better off giving birth against her will, and that the State of Florida, which totally failed to keep her safe, should have been allowed, against its own laws, to compel this child to bear a child. She was too young to have sex, too young to know her own mind about abortion--but not too young to be forced onto the delivery table for one of the most painful experiences human beings endure, in which the risk of death for her was three times as great as in abortion. Ah, Christian compassion! Christian sadism, more likely. It was the courts that showed humanity when they let the girl terminate her pregnancy.

But not as dangerous as not being able to get it up! Can you IMAGINE how EMBARASSING that would be? Good thing insurance companies cover those prescriptions. Life saving drugs, pah, this is more important!

After all, the HPV vaccinations will instantly turn all women into harlots. Viagra has no such effect on men.

Here ends the sarcasm.

70 percent of women will have it in their lifetime, and there's no way to get numbers on men because you can only diagnose the ones with visible symptoms. The carriers may never know, like my ex who still swears I got it from 'slutting around' with my two protected partners over a year we were separated rather than from him and his 4 unprotected partners over the same period (in his defense, he has nerve damage that makes it almost impossible to use condoms, but still.)

45. The goal of preventing ignorant rutting
is well enough served by the truth. There is no need to embroider it with lies.

Here's my rebuttal:
"Condoms lead to cancer": Huh?
"Birth control pills are only 20 percent effective": Under what circumstances?
"Sexually transmitted diseases are spread by skin contact alone": A major stretch. HPV can be spread through contact with skin uncovered by condoms. Not true of the others, as far as I know.
"Third-trimester fetuses can be aborted": No.
"Video games lead to homicide": No. Also, unusual concern for violence, from a right-wing fundy Christian.
"Human papilloma virus can be transferred through condoms": See above.
"Teens can achieve "second virginity" through abstinence.": Defies the definition of virginity. It's true, teens, and anyone else, can get a little space for themselves and reduce chances of diseases and pregnancy through abstinence. However, sex is part of the human condition. The point is to practice it as thoughtfully as possible.

My first gynecologist told me a basic fact about the failure rate of birth control pill: 100% of the pregancies that occur with women on the pill are due improper use of the pill.

I would suspect that these girls that got abortion who were on the pill were not using them properly or just lying to cover-up the fact that they were having totally unprotected sex (ie no condom or some form of birth control pill).

So a kid hears condoms cause cancer. He's in a situation where he and his girlfriend are about to have sex, anyway. But he remembers what this bitch said (lies) and refuses to use a condom.

OK, NOW they have BOTH risked getting STDs from each other AND they are risking pregnancy, as well.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THE TRUE GOAL OF THESE "PROGRAMS?"

Actual information that will HELP these kids or lies that will only serve to hurt them?

You really have to wonder. Good God, good for that dad, I'd sue the shit out of them too and I'm not a very happy to sue kinda person.

50. Oh and here's a tip for all you parents of younger kids out there.
TELL THEM NOW. When you think it's an age-appropriate time YOU tell them the truth.

There is no way I'm going to tell my daughter condoms cause cancer as I've NEVER seen any stats on this at all. And what kind of cancer are they talking about? Cancer of the penis, which is one of the rarest forms of cancer around? If that were true, WAY more men would get that!

Or is it cervical cancer? Why aren't we seeing higher rates of that, then? And where are the studies to back up this woman's claim?

No, tell your kids the truth before the lying fundies get to them. Because God knows they don't give a shit what kind of bullshit they shovel out to your kids, as long as the district cuts that check to them.

:eyes:

Forewarned is forearmed. Arm your kids with real facts.

She says that 80% of teenage girls seeking abortion are on birth control pills therefore the pill must be only 20% effective. What stupid logic!!! I don'e even know how to decribe how this is flawed it just is.

The only way to determine effectivity is to look at the number of pregrancies of people on the pill compared to the total number of users.

The pill is 99% effective and the unwanted pregnacies which do oocur are ususally from improper use i.e. forgetting to take it every day.

So, tell me this. Will these kids be coming home and telling their parents that they the parents are going to be getting cancer from using condoms and to stop using them? If Mommy is taking the Pill, where are all the brothers and sisters they should have from the "failure rate"? ROFL

This isn't a stretch either. When my daughter was younger, a teacher in school told her that soda and coffee contained "drugs". My daughter came home and told me that if I drank them I was a "drug addict". That is what her teacher said. Unbelievable. She also said that she should not take medication from her doctor because they were drugs too. I had to sit down and have a long talk with my daughter about "good" drugs versus "bad" drugs, and the abuse of drugs. After which, I placed a phone call to her teacher.

Just imagine the nightmare all of this sex "education" is going to cause? I sure hope parents are aware of what is being taught in these schools because the parents are going to have many a long talk with their kids to clear up all this misinformation.

Or does Washington and the religious right really think that parents believe all this crap too?

Edited on Fri May-13-05 12:38 PM by patcox2
A Federal law on the boooks since 1996 mandates that only those sex ed programs which teach "abstinence only" can receive federal funding. So thats nothing new. Under this law, the only information that a child is allowed to receive from a federally funded program, is that abstinence is the ony way to prevent pregnancy and STDs.

There is a provision in this law which explicitly provides that the only information which may be given to kids about birth control IS THAT IT DOES NOT WORK. The only information which can legally be given to kids about condoms is that THEY DON'T WORK.

So you see, this particular speaker is not a loon, at least not any more a loon than any person working in one of these federal grant-supported "abstinence only" programs. In telling kids about condoms causing cancerm she was simply complying with federal law.

Now I don't know about you, but this ought to be a lot more scary than just one loon spouting off her idiotic beliefs. I really can't dredge up much indignation about a lone loon. But this law, which passed under Clinton (I wonder if he vetoed it?) really is much more shocking. FEDERAL LAW MANDATES LYING TO KIDS ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL. Isn't that, well, beyond Orwellian?

Now it gets more and more interesting, read on. The law mandates that kids can only be told bad things about condoms, like how often they break and the fact that they are only 90% effective against pregnancy and disease. But thats not really all that scary, so the right wing loons looked far and wide for something they could really scare kids about, and they came up with the fact that condoms are not effective against HPV, the virus that causes genital warts (and all other warts as well. So for years now, the centerpiece of these "abstinence only" campaigns has been a propaganda-scare campaign about how "The HPV is gonna getcha if you don't watch out" (I get the impresssion that to the red state rubes, all acronyms are pretty much indistinguishable from each other, and as symbols of modernism, all are suspect, so this is really effective in the church basements of the south, where they hate AIDS, HPV, the CIA, and the NAACP equally).

Now this is pretty much a piece of idiocy, because the reason that condoms aren't effective against HPV is because HPV causes warts, and warts can be anywhere, so unless you pull the condom down ver your head and all the way to your feet, it is indeed possible to transmit your elbow wart to someone's knee, despite the fact that you are using a condom.

Nevertheless, its true, you can transmit HPV even with a condom on (though I don't know where you would get the HPV, I beleive that the condom actually does block transmission between the actual parts separated by the condom). But the Cretinous Fundies have taken this fact about HPV and run with it, making it the big centerpiece of their federally mandated disinformation and propaganda compaign. And this is where the cancer connection comes in. A big part of this scare tactic is for them to stress the true fact that HPV, when it infects the cervix, does in fact cause cervical cancer. So its not an out and out fabrication this woman is throwing out there. Though I still fail to see how my elbow wart is going to result in someone getting cervical HPV, but I am no scientist, who knows.

But the plot stinkens, because there has been a new development in the case of the Inbred Drooling Fundies vs. Condoms, and it happened just last week, when news broke that conservative groups are lobbying against FDA approval of an HPV vaccine which is now being developed. Yup, thats right kiddies, the Mouth Breathing Cretins of the Fundie Right (MBCOTFR)(Making up acronyms is fun, now I know why the Mogambo does it so much) want to squelch the development of the HPV vaccine, solely because it will take away their best scare story in the anti-condom crusade (of course, they also believe that any medical intervention in the case of fornicators stricken with STDs is wrong, as it intereferes with God's purpose of smiting them for their wickedness).

Now thats a good story, ain't it? Thats the world we live in.

143. A rebuttal speaker would be a great idea (from the irate father)
Assuming that the school does get a rebuttal speaker, the speaker should mention the last speaker's bio. Not one whit of scientific or research background to back up the misinformation.

The speaker should also mention studies along with the facts, and hand out places to get more true info.

Oh yes, the rebuttal speaker should be the principal. In this way, the students will get the message that the last speaker was NOT qualified to give that kind of talk and gave nothing but untrue misinformation.

Right now, teens aren't dumb enough to be taken in by the lies, but you keep repeating them often enough and squelching the facts, the next generation isn't going to have the facts as available.

We have to nip the lies in the bud. They've gotten away with lying so blatantly for far too long.

Organizations everywhere should demand that the speakers they get be able to back up statistics with studies and other assertions with facts and source material.

You can bet this did not include the costs of transportation, hotel and meals which those that contracted for her services had to pay.

She probably made more money in this one-hour gig than she ever made in "acting."

Having had the opportunity to be around highschool students, both grandchildren and interactions with the local highschool students, they are not as gullible as many parents/adults think they are. I have found that to be very savvy and they know when anyone is trying to con them.

They should bring this lass back for their career day and she can re-enact her talk to show the kids how they too can become a speaker. Select a really good subject that is being bandied about by politico's, religious fundies, bigots, etc. Take your show on the road to those areas of the country that you know where frictions exist between its people.

They used to call them traveling salesmen but they still are CONS and they can make big bucks by spewing their ignorance and hate. Look at Ann Coulter, she graduated Law school and has never actually practised law but has made millions talking hate, violence, bigotry, etc., etc. Whatever her followers want she is capable of providing the service......that is for a $20,000 - $35,000 speaking fee.

146. Actually, Ann did practice law.
She was part of Linda Trip's legal counsel.

Anyways, I was on the speakers site, and I found an ad for *gasp* birth control! A big banner for http://www.paragard.com/

The irony of google ads!
