Not at the start; we talked of free men and liberty yet we had slaves.
Sigh.

Looked more like the Rebels and less like the Empire. That ended around the same time the original Star Wars came out, strangely enough.

It started with the ethnic cleansing of the Native American Indians and expropriation of their land (which continues to this day).

It's always been there, but now it's being embraced with complete, unabashed abandon.

George Lucas makes analogies between Darth Vader's lust for power and the willingness to do anything to achieve it to the United States today. Darth Bush, Evil Emporer Rove, Count Cheney and DeLay the Hutt. It makes perfect sense.

the color on the flags. he said red is for the soldiers lost. white is purity, justice, and blue is for truth and wisdom. our flag today in the u.s. is about all red, the blood of the soldiers. the blue and white are missing

http://start.earthlink.net/article/top?guid=20050515/4286c940_3421_1334520050515-726375412How long before the Right-Wing uses this as more "proof" of "liberal bias"? The way Joe Scumbrough was raving about Star Wars, I guess he will have to reverse that and start ranting about how the "Hollywood liberal elites" are further persecuting the Cons.

What's more amazing is that these historical patterns manage to repeat themselves. Tyrants concentrate power in order to maintain an uneven status quo which favors themselves, and the subjects revolt in order to cast off an increasingly oppressive system of governance which they no longer have use for. On and on the historical cycle goes; as the pendulum swings back and forth, scientific progress steadily arcs upward.
This leads to a consistency in the achievements of technology, and the inevitability that conflict will span outward from regional to continental to global proportions. Lucas merely takes this historically-driven concept one step further, into outer space.
Our reach has outgrown our potential to survive the tragedies of human error.
