Women Will Have to Save the World
Found this story posted over at Ms.

Is a global feminist movement rising up to oppose our dear militarists in the White House? I don't know, you tell me.

1. I like this statement
As Jasmina Tesanovic, a member of Women in Black in Serbia, says, "My enemy is no longer a bad hero, or a politician, or a person in power, but the culture that makes such primitive people possible and empowers them." The organizing is part of a culture war to end the love of military glory, power, dominance and hierarchy often taught as part of male traditions.

But I think men are perfectly capable of evolving as well and we need to get there together.

25. Ecofeminism
I run across ecofeminist ideas from time to time but have yet to give them much scrutiny. Besides Moore's book, could you recommend anything else to read?

9. Would you like me to list the men
who are guilty of the same things. I'm sure my list would be MUCH longer. What about the women who have made change happen? Oh, that's much harder to find because their roles were written out of the history books. I had the pleasure of hearing Gloria Steinem speak this summer. I'll have to dig up my notes later because she had some excellent observations about this topic.

12. See my post below
"The proletariat will save the world".
And the rationalization was just the same:
"Yes Joe Stalin was an SOB, but the capitalists have been doing the
same thing for centuries".

16. It's not that, it's the mindset
"This group or that group will save the world when they assume power".
When the problem is not about groups but about the very nature of
power.

18. "The male aggressive voice" Dammit, when are people going to grow up
Until people start taking out the sexual identity and gender prejudice in statements like this, we're going NO WHERE.

There were plenty, PLENTY of women who were just as if not more aggressive as the men rallying around the warlord president

It's agression. Period. it's male, it's female - it's a human characteristic.

21. Plenty, but not a majority
The gender gap in polling has been a pretty consistent feature of US opinion on the Iraq war. And of course, women favored Gore to Bush by a large margin.

The reason it matters. Of course we should be wary of allowing the majority to tyrannize us, but by the same token we should not allow ourselves to be bullied by minority extremists.

Before insisting upon gender correctness, consider it this way. An identifiable, constructed "male aggressive voice" has been leading us down the path to war and the general degradation of international relations. As much as you would like to decouple gender from aggression, the powers that be are working against you. And they have huge Marshall stacks. Your beef should be primarily addressed to Rove and Co., not at potential allies.

Ask yourself what's more vital in a political allegiance at this moment, peaceful co-existence between nations that are armed to the teeth and happy to lob bombs, or agreement upon your nuanced understanding of difference? Personally, speaking as a man, I prefer to align myself with those who share my views on the things that matter and allow some degree of aporia on questions of gender difference.

Okay, I really don't mean to trivialize your concerns, but I do think they're diproportionate and perhaps a little out of place. I reckon you have a different sense of priorities than I do. Perhaps you could explain them and what you think they would accomplish politically.

At this time I say if these women want to save the world from the Bushistas, more power to them.

22. yes and no
Normally, I'm weary of essentialism, but since 9/11, the most aggressive hawkish people I've encountered have been men.

Of course, I know many, many men who have nothing to do with it, and so you can't generalize.

But this blind vengeful aggressive freeper mentality is consistent with a desire to dominate...which makes it more likely that traditional types will adopt it.

I do feel that things have gotten more...macho in the US since 9/11. That whole "let's solve our problems by kicking ass" mentality really frightens and alienates me as a woman.

24. At the beginning of the French Revolution, it was the women who instigated
the initial movement. It was they who were pissed at the "Let them eat Shit" comment Marie baby said which later led her to the "Blade".

In America, the women must join together with those who see a great wrong doing by the Pubs and vote the scum Pubs out.

Come, we find the red bandanas

27. peace
"There are no illusions about ovaries making all women good and peaceful. Instead, Ann Snitow of the Network of East-West Women urges women to acknowledge their past complicity with men's wars. Few expect Bush National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice to give up her allegiance to traditional male stomp-and-rule values. But men who share their alternate vision are welcome in the movement."
