Has the party of Tom Delay lost its way?
The Republican Party has been a prepetual minority party in this country for the last 100 years. Until recently, when they have come into the majority, they have little to celebrate in the last century.
Social security, World War II, and Medicare were all achieved without a single republican vote. The budget was balanced in the 90's and an ethnic cleansing was stopped in Kosovo all without help from Republicans. In fact in the 90's the surplus was large enough to shore up social security for 100 years.
When the Republicans took over it was largely on a reform, ethics, and fiscal conservative agenda. Yet the republicans have managed to create the largest deficit in history and are led by a man (Tom Delay) that if indicted in Texas, which seems probable, is facing up to 99 years in jail for political felonies.
It seems the republican idea of reform is to tinker with the ethics rules of the people's house unilaterally to protect Tom Delay.
Was this why the people put republicans in power? Bush won re-election by the slimmest margin in history in 2000 and in 2004 he had the narrowest wartime re-election in our country. His approval rating is lower than any president in history. Had Tom Delay not re-ditricted Texas the republicans would have lost seats in congress in 04. The state houses also turned toward democrats in 04.
