So ... how can fundraising for others on DU be done smarter?
Edited on Wed May-18-05 01:20 AM by FlemingsGhost
Is it possible we should simply refrain from the activity all together?

This topic should be discussed by ... well, the people who want to donate money to others. No? Then it should be presented to DU for approval.

It is OUR money, after all.

So, let's embark on a fruitful discussion as to what we are going to do with OUR money, when "gathered" at a site, that hmmmmm ... some folks are donating to, as well.

How should we spend OUR money? Let's use the site that also relies on OUR money, to sort it out.

m'kay?

oh and one more point..while certainly one can arrange better next time such as a trust account..you all are gonna be pretty fucking embarrassed with these pithy threads about OUR MONEY if Andy drops dead in the near future.

Just a little food for thought.

2. Here since day one (as DemsUnite)
How can DU raise funds smarter?

Anarchy1999 broached a topic that I feel needs addressing.

It was locked ... voila!

Still wanna question my motives?

3. It was probably locked for a reason
there's a sick human being on the other end of the subject. That much we know. FOr all you know there won't be anymore direct fundraising here.

5. I operate with the belief that EVERYTHING is on the up and up.
Doesn't discount the fact that the endeavor has become a point of conflict and contention. Something similar happened with Bev Harris.

I'd say the issued needs to be discussed.

Or this thread gets locked ...

6. It became a point of conflict and contention less over the money
since the people who donated the most seem to have little issue with it and more over people opening their mouths on a public board when they had other means of ascertaining facts.

Bev Harris was a con artist and some of us knew it long before she had DU'ers write her book for her.

7. Respectfully, of course, how does that change the facts here?
Feelings are hurt.

Hardly an environment to be political activists, in my opinion.

That is why we are all here, right?

Or, do we like Soap Operas too much to examine and discuss our behaviors?

9. Guess you've not done much activism
It's always high drama..and there's always people demanding answers thinking everyone needs to be accountable to them.

As I said...it should be handled through a trust if for nothing more than to not expose the beneficiary to more income taxes.

12. You are mistaken.
"Guess you've not done much activism"

====================================
"It's always high drama ..."

Gee ... if that changed maybe we, as a group, wouldn't be so easily distracted, defeated and yes ... duped out of our money (if that is indeed the case)

But hey, by all means, continue with the process that always requires high drama. It's sure working like a charm.

13. I thought you were taking a different tack?
Now you're back to being duped out of your money again.

Again..the person these threads pertains to will read them. He is ill. There's always time for these discussions but holding them now really lacks compassion and for that matter, it's actually pretty classless and lowlife.

Imagine if it were YOU that were ill.

4. I Totally missed the Andy drama. What happened?
Last I saw, the board had raised 50K for his surgery. But I'm reading hints that all is not well, and I can't seem to find what the deal is.

Would someone take pity on a sporadic DUer and provide the cliffs-notes version of what happened? One or two sentences is all I ask.

8. Here.
Andy's surgery has recently been questioned, as either legitimate or even life threatening. Some have claimed he does not have cancer, but a non-terminal tumor. Skinner is seeking proof of all claims. We know Andy is sick, but at this point, there is no official word on the cost of the upcoming surgery or it's relevance. The questions are growing, but answers are short in coming. A few strong voices vouch for Andy and almost all are believed, the trouble is questions are still growing each day in small and uncertain ways. Hopefully, all will be sorted soon.

These are just the facts, not my opinion and I'm a donor, so yes I do have an opinion. Let's say, I'm still happy to have given my money.

10. Thank you, sleipnir.
Do you have any thoughts as to how the donation process can be improved?

11. Thank you for the info.
It's a fascinating twist. I did wonder for a moment when it was all going down, "what if this is all a big scam?" But I was touched to see everyone's generosity.
