PORTSMOUTH — About 300 workers at the National Visa Center could potentially lose their jobs if the government awards a key contract to a different company.

SI International of Reston, Va., has been the prime contractor for the center — located at Pease International Tradeport — since April 1994.

Alan Hill, director of corporate communications for the company, said the initial contract expired at the end of September last year. The State Department granted two, three-month extensions and then is currently on month-to-month extensions running through May.

"They will be making an announcement any day on who wins the new contract," he said.
