Dean asks Clark to join his campaign - 09/11/03

Clark expected to enter presidential race

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrat Howard Dean has asked retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark to support his presidential campaign if Clark decides not to enter the race.

The pair met in California on Saturday to discuss the presidential race that Clark is expected to enter as early as next week, becoming the 10th Democratic candidate.

Dean, the current front-runner, asked Clark for his support on the outside chance that Clark doesn't seek the presidency on his own.

"They've gotten together several times," said Joe Trippi, Dean's campaign manager. "They talk about a lot of issues. Every time the governor talks to him he asks for Clark's support.

"I don't think there's any news in that. I hope every Democrat is asking for support."

1. Um, why?
This is over a week old, why are you posting it?

Just wondering.

6. I'm sorry to bother you
But you just posted a week old story with no commentary. I guess the funny thing about the General Discussion board is we normally discuss the items posted. Since this story is over a week old and has been talked about in many different places on this board, I would assume that if you were going to repost it you might have a reason. What is your reason?

7. I think the point is...
that Dean tried to keep Clark out by offering him the VP slot, or at least that's what I thought when I read the original article.

Of course, it backfired on Dean.

8. When I first read it
I thought it was the Dean people trying to get his name in all the articles about Clark. I think they, like most people, know Clark was going to get a much of media and they wanted to tag along for part of it.

I think it was a minor backfire by the Dean camp.

17. I've thought this all along, although I didn't think he'd run.
By keeping his name out there, I believe that Clark has been positioning himself for the VP spot. Running keeps his name out there and shores up Dean's position.

10. Dean was asked flat out on some show
whether he would consider Clark as VP. He replied yes, among others, and went on to say that it was much too soon and would be way to arrogant of his campaign to even be thinking about VPs. He then mentioned that he has asked Clark for advice on foreign affairs, and that Clark had asked his on domestic policy. That thought was repeated by his campaign at least once that I recall. They talk, yes. However that doesn't mean that Dean has asked Clark to be his VP, or vice versa for that matter.

12. I watched an interview with Dean also. Maybe a different one than you saw?
He was asked if he would like to have Clark as his running mate. Dean unequivocally and without hesitation said yes he would. I don't have a link either, but that is what I heard him say.

15. I would like to research the actual transcript but I am having trouble
Edited on Sat Sep-20-03 09:52 AM by NNN0LHI
When I punch in the key words all I come up with are thousands of hits from Dean and Clark web sites. Do you remember what show it was on? I thought it was an interview with Judy Woodruff, but I am not sure? Do you remember? Thank you in advance if you do.

4. However,
the article does not support the notion that Dean asked for Clark's hand in marriage.

"There is a lot of vetting that would have to be done before you would have those kinds of discussions," Dean said when asked whether he had discussed the vice presidency with Clark.

Also doesn't mean that the requisite vetting hadn't occurred yet, either.

11. He would have been a fool not to
If what I heard that Clark said today is true (that he hadn't made up his mind to run until Sunday) then his support was still up for grabs. Clark is an impressive man whose support would be a good thing. I fail to see that as a bad thing. Evidently Clark appeared with more than a few of our candidates.
