9/11: from tragedy to hilarity

Michael Moore has done us the favor of transcribing part of an interview with George and Laura Bush, conducted by Peggy Noonan, which appears in the current print edition of Ladies Home Journal:

Peggy Noonan (the interviewer): You were separated on September 11th. What was it like when you saw each other again?

Laura Bush: Well, we just hugged. I think there was a certain amount of security in being with each other than being apart.

George W. Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note.

1. You know
It was a week and three days before I saw anybody smiling around here. And that was only because a neighbor we thought might be dead had been late to work and had survived that day.

2. Aside from the obvious
that the note of "hilarity" is totally inappropriate....

picturing those two running down stairs (as described, I can't bring myself to repeat it) sounds like some television sitcom than the stately halls of the White House.

There are sooooo many things in that interview that reveal his personality, that it makes me sick just thinking about it.

He's a shallow man, totally unqualified for the job.

4. And the obsequious Peggy Noonan...
"So the day starts in tragedy and ends in Marx Brothers."

What awful people.

6. HAW HAW HAW
@%%$@%$&% It's all about him. Glad he thinks that's sooooo funny.

But here's the real laugh for the rest of us:
George W. Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, "you'll be sleeping downstairs. Washington's still a dangerous place." And I said no, I can't sleep down there, the bed didn't look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester.

Awwwwww, poor didums. Can't do without your comfy-wumfy bed even during a national crisis? Did those nasty planes upset your schedule?

I'm just surprised that he didn't order the Secret Service to carry his comfy-bed down to the basement.

11. I like to joke around during tough times but
I don't present it as a funny anecdote to the press as the leader of the free world during the time of national crisis.

Their internal filters just don't work right, do they?

14. you hit it on the head, Fuzz ...
"Their internal filters just don't work right".

This kind of reminds me of Gene Wilder's lament -- "How do you explain 'taste' to people who completely lack it?"

8. "So your husband's the alledged leader of the Free World.....
..an attack by terrorists has felled the two tallest buildings in the largest city in your country. Over 3000 innocent citizens have lost their lives on that day.

And all you can think about as you lie in your bed and try to fall asleep is how ridiculous you must've looked to the SS agent as you fumbled around in your fuzzy slippers?"

Words escape me.

9. Don't forget ...
that at the end of the year, the AWOL's were interviewed, and commented that they had a great year in 2001.

Too bad no one else felt his joy at that time.

Cheers
Drifter

13. interesting -- so much for realism in the Bush 9/11 movie ...
They had him decorously clad in pyjamas, rather than a ratty old pair of running shorts.

The movie also implied that Dubya decided to sleep upstairs because he wanted to set an example and show he wasn't afraid (and demonstrate solidarity with ordinary Americans who didn't have a bunker to hide in). But here, he comes off sounding like a whiny crybaby who didn't like the mattress down there ....

15. Gee, and here I thought
That that DC9/11 piece of shit movie was all 100% factual. Who would have thought that propaganda would be mostly lies.

I can't believe the threads I read at FR the night that movie aired. They were treating it like a documentary. One comment, "This out to shut those lying liberals up about Bush being a coward".

Ok, maybe this interview doesn't show that he is a coward, but it shows that he is a soulless asshole who somehow found humor in the tragic events of that day. Typical rich, totally self-absorbed.
