I'm hand delivering a letter to the local office of Gordon Smith later this afternoon, and plan to engage in a little chit-chat with the staff. Should be interesting, as my mug was all over the local TV news leading the MoveOn Rally for the Filibuster.

Tune in if you can, its on the net at c-span.org.

We will promise to allow the confirmation of the judges if you stop the threats.

Centrists Reach Deal to Avert a Showdown Over Judicial Nominees
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: May 23, 2005
WASHINGTON -- Centrists from both parties reached a compromise Monday night to avoid a showdown on President Bush's stalled judicial nominees and the Senate's own filibuster rules, officials from both parties said.

These officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the agreement would clear the way for yes or no votes on some of Bush's nominees, but make no guarantee.

Do they actually have to wear the swastika on their sleeve?

77. Bush threw his temper tantrum and got what he wanted
"I want an up and down vote and if I don't get it, I will DESTROY the fillibuster!!!"

Dumb ass

President Bush:
Q: <...>And if I may ask you, Mr. President, as you know, the casualties of Iraq is again high today -- 50 more people dying. Do you think that insurgence is getting harder now to defeat militarily? Thank you.
PRESIDENT BUSH: No, I don't think so. I think they're being defeated. And that's why they continue to fight.

So if the insurgents stopped fighting, would that mean we were losing? What the hell kind of answer is this? What the hell kind of logic is this supposed to be?

MY VIEW:

His approval ratings are tanking. If we play our cards right, the Dems could get control of the House or Senate in 2006 then we won't have to worry about his nominations...unless we can get him out first. Possibility?

88. Lott was booted, Frist had to compromise today
because he didn't have enough votes. If we stay focused, this pattern of awful leadership will do them in.

90. Sorry...
Trent Lott, as the former Majority Leader, was booted and Frist took over as leader and now it looks as though he can't control his rank and file either.

76. Did you catch today's Orwellian inversion: The 'Constitutional option'
mentioned by just about every Republican speaker at the press conference is what Trent Lott dubbed the 'Nuclear Option'! A procedure in which Cheney would his biggest lie yet and "interpret" Senate rules to mean the opposite of what they've meant for more than 200 years is now the "Constitutional option"! And the Rethugs have succeeded in bullying the Dems with this threat, AGAIN.

84. Just like the cold war
Show massive force and wait for the other side to blink.

We just blinked.

I honestly thought this was the GOP strategy all along - threaten nuclear war to bring the other side to the table. None of those judges would have gotten through if we had filibustered, but now some of these atrocious judges have.

Now, any time they want something, all they have to do is threaten the end of the filibuster and we will happily negotiate.

They win.

86. I'm in mourning...
I'm deeply saddened by the death of the system of checks and balances that is so important to this country.

Everyone loses with this compromise.

I knew it was coming, but in a way I would have been happier with a complete loss by the Dems because then the Reeptiles would implode and go down sooner. Now it's just a slower, more painful agony.
