Question: re: Filibuster Deal
The Democrats do still have the right to filibuster Pricilla Owens and Janice Rogers-Brown, correct? We did not giv that up in the deal, did we?

The Gang of 14 have agreed to vote for cloture and Yes on the most extremist three judges. It's a win-win situation for the Repugs.

I have no idea what the Repugs gave the Dems. There doesn't seem to be a damned thing other than avoiding a meltdown.

In other words, the Dems give the Repugs everything they want and the Repugs won't meltdown the republic. It's a complete and utter bullshit deal.

4. Ok, now I'm really pissed off
This just confirms that I did the right thing by leaving the Democratic Party. What the hell do they stand for anymore? Caving in to the Repugs?

2. looks to me like we just put off this showdown until SC nominee
Dewine just said they could use the nuclear option if they feel Dems are being "extreme" in filibustering nominees.

3. Without compromise, Scalia or Thomas would be Chief Justice
Without this compromise, Bush would put either Scalia or Thomas up as Chief Justice when Rehnquist retires. Now, bush will have to be careful about his selection because we will have the right to filibuster.

5. We ALWAYS HAD the right to filibuster.
This deal didn't get anything NEW for the Democrats.

6. I think it did give us something...
it gave us the right to filibuster other extremist nominations in the future, including supreme court nominations

It gave us a place at the table for consultation on future nominations

It gave us half of a new bi-partisan moderating force within the senate

It gave us a wounded Bill Frist

It leaves us still standing as an opposing force

It gave us something that's good for the country and good for the institution of the senate
