Wow! Bush proposes a radical use for Social Security!
Edited on Tue May-31-05 03:39 PM by BurtWorm
From the news conference today:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/31/politics/31TEXT-BUSH.html?pagewanted=print

"And so I'm not surprised that there is a reluctance and I'm not surprised that there has been some initial push-back. But all that does is make me want to continue to travel and remind people that Congress has a duty to come up with some solutions.

"They're beginning to have hearings in the Congress. The Ways and Means and the Finance Committee in the Senate are going to have hearings. There are some interesting ideas that have been proposed. We've proposed some interesting ideas.

"One idea is make sure that low-income seniors get benefits such that, when they retire, they're not in poverty."

:sarcasm:

33. Well, you can't put the fart back in the elephant
He said it. . .the Republican asshats need to accept it because King Pompous Fool is infalible in their eyes.

See what happens when he's not given the questions before hand to have his brain (Karl Rove) tailor make Chimpy McCokespoon's answers?

Doh is right!

up until then? %##@@^%*()*&&%# idiot!

A living wage would help them be less dependent on SS in the future. You can not save or invest if you can't even buy socks.

21. That didn't work out too well.
Bush Life Story: Once he graduated from the university he so richly deserved to have entered, Shrubbie got given a company. But Shrubbie screwed the company up. Shrubbie cried. Daddy got him a new one. Shrubbie screwed the company up. Shrubbie cried. Daddy got him a new one. Shrubbie screwed the company up. Shrubbie cried. Daddy got him a new one. Shrubbie got given a country. Shrubbie screwed the country up. But he didn't care so that was OK.

17. The neocons' idea is to turn SS into a welfare program
that only pays benefits to the poor--who of course have no political clout, and are everybody's favorite whipping boy. If they succeed, it's just a matter of time before SS disappears altogether. Let Granny eat cat food!

8. Partly.
But also, theoretically anyway, it's your money, plus a bit of compound interest. As FDR envisioned it, SS is already a private account, invested for you by the government in risk-free bonds. It's NOT a welfare program--it's YOUR money.

26. NO, it's an insurance program
Insurance Insurance Insurance

Designed to provide an adequate benefit against poverty due to old age. And later due to disability or the death of a provider.

Insurance. NOT an investment account of any sort.

11. Bush thinks we shouldn't pass a burden onto the next generation.
"And now people are beginning to see the realities of Social Security and the fact that we're about to pass on a huge burden to a young generation of Americans; a burden, by the way, which doesn't have to be passed on."

Which is why he wants to make the tax cuts permanent. :eyes:

35. Bush has already solved the SS problem,
by doing absolutely nothing to combat global warming, and allowing coal burning electric plants to fire up again. By speeding up nuclear proliferation, and by pissing off the ones who have proliferated. By leaving our nations chemical industry unprotected from terrorists. By ignoring a report by scientists in 91 countries who have said that we will squander the remaining global resources of this planet in about fifty years. By not being proactive against the avian flu. By sending this country into such financial dept that there will be no assistance programs for this nations poor. In fifty years SS will be the last thing on any body's mind.

39. Bush says he wants Americans to realize that Social Security is ...
...a problem. The only problem with social security is what Bush has done to it in the last 54 months, spending every dime of social security surplus on tax cuts for the wealthiest 5% of Americans and issuing Federal debt notes to the social security trust fund which he now does not now want to ever pay back. Instead, he wants to borrow more money to pay future social security benefits and add that to the national debt burden which the middle class will have to pay through increased taxes. It's all Bushit!

He is not increasing the amount for the poor. He is leaving it alone and decreasing those who make over $20,000/$25,000.

The reason he is leaving the poor alone is, if he didn't, they would probably qualify for food stamps and other things.
