2. I always thought it was either Buchannon or Herbert Herbert Bush
LBJ's illigetimate son Jonah Goldberg thought he didn't exist.

3. He was on almost every list.
He didn't stick out or anything, because he wasn't famous. But he was on all the lists.

A few months ago, when there was a rumor it might be Poppy, I went and researched all the possibilities, and I told my husband at that time I thought it was Felt. He was the one person who fit all the requirements, plus he'd almost admitted it at one time, plus he was close to dying.

12. Not high enough for Tweety to mention, apparently
Yes, he's been on a few lists, but most pundits dismissed him rather cavalierly because they didn't know who the hell he was.

That made him a perfect candidate, though.

5. given the notoriety of some of the other suspects --
Haig, Buchannan, "Poppy", Rehnquist -- it would be easy to overlook a guy like Felt, even if he were on the lists. If this really is him, what an anti-climax.

6. A lot of people thought it was
L. Patrick Gray, head of the FBI at the time. Felt was #2 in the FBI.

7. Sure
He is named as the leading suspect on the White House tapes, and has been on every serious "short list" since.

8. they just played some of Nixon's tapes
on NBC...Haldeman told Nixon it was Felt. Nixon made his normal obnoxious comment about him being a Jew. But Felt was on many lists...but I never heard of him till today.

9. Jeffrey Toobin, who I trust, said the story had the ring of truth
and the guy shows up consistently on every list of possibles. He's just not intriguing , darn it all, the way Pat Buchanan would be.

11. "He's just not intriguing..."
Think about what he was convicted for. This is a guy who was one of J. Edgar Hoover's top students. There is a lot more to this than meets the eye.

10. I believe it was Felt because Bernstein has confirmed it.
I wouldn't believe Felt -- or Woodward -- or Bradlee. But I'll believe Bernstein.
