THE PRO-CURE MOVEMENT
<http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8017171/site/newsweek/}[br />Jonathan Alter:

Only Bush bitter-enders and the pope are in the perverse position of valuing the life of an ailing human being less than that of a tiny clump of cells no bigger than the period at the end of this sentence.

snip...

The next battle is in the Senate, where Sen. Sam Brownback now says he will filibuster the stem-cell bill.

snip...

Unless there's another war, stem cells will become one of the defining issues of the 2006 campaign. Look for smart Democrats to run ads with relatives of the afflicted ("My sister has Parkinson's," "My father has Alzheimer's") pointing out that Congressman X is so extreme, he voted against a bill supported by many Republicans to begin curing these diseases.

-------------------------------------------------
Whether you agree with him on other issues or not, this is an important one. As he says, this will become THE topic of the 2006 campaigns. This is, in my opinion, not only an issue we can win on, but, more importantly, it can save lives.

2. Brownback is actually worse than Frist. THIS IS OUR ISSUE.
We represent the "culture of life" and the Republicans, well just look.

We should have pounded on this in 2000, IMHO. It was an opportunity then, immediate. Now it's five years later and we can clean their clock. Some pretty resonsible researchers were claiming "cures" for key diseases in five years.

Well, lets kick some butt.

3. Here is a snip of a conversation
between Arlen Specter and Brownback...priceless

They're talking about stem cells. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), who looks like hell (no hair, sunken cheeks, raspy voice) is letting conservative Senator Sam Brownback really have it. Specter is "going personal" talking about his Hodgkins Lymphoma and how if the war on cancer had gotten the funding it needed and deserved he might not have cancer today.

Brownback then says:
BROWNBACK: George and Arlen, when did each of your lives begin? When did your life biologically start? And we shouldn't be researching on that life at any time during its continuum unless we have your consent. When did your life start?

SPECTER: Well Sam, I'm a lot more concerned at this point about when my life is gonna end.

4. And the real kicker is
that if we vote against it, it won't stop the research, the research will just happen in other countries and the US will slide ever farther backwards in science.

We're heading toward the day when people go to other countries not just for plastic surgery, but to cure their ailing parents and children while here in the US we have back alley stem cell clinics.

Better that it happen out in the open where we can keep an eye on it.
