DU Hate mailbag
Anyone else think that conservatives cannot spell or punctuate properly because they're so angry? Or is it because spelling wasn't taught in the Bible? Or that they are all home-schooled. I just went through the Hate Mailbag and not one of these idiots can spell or punctuate. I envision them sitting in a very dark room, typing like a dervish and having their eyeballs pop out. I go to right-wing websites and am VERY careful with my spelling, punctuation and how I express myself simply because I figure it will be WAY over their heads. Boggles my mind.

Have a good day
Your friend in Democracy

8. Why do they write at all?
That's what always puzzles me. Sometimes I go to that "other site" just to check up on them, but it would honestly never occur to me to write them a letter telling them what morons I thought they were. What would be the point? Would anybody care or listen about my letter over there? I sincerely doubt it. It wouldn't be worth spending the time on.

But I wonder if these people are delusional enough to think that their badly spelled, rambling, crazy-ass letters will suddenly make the moderators (and anyone else at DU) say, "Gee, I never thought of it that way! Hillary DOES suck! Wow, crazy right-wing nutjob, you've changed my whole outlook on life with this one amazing letter! I think I'll run off and join a fundie church today!"

:silly:

Or maybe they are just so agitated that they feel the need to vent somewhere. I don't know. But I agree that they all do spell really badly.

12. Trying to project stupidity on conservatives...
is what lost us the last two elections. It's time we learned that they are smart, determined and relentless. Spelling, grammar and punctuation aren't that stellar here either.

I'm sorry, but anyone who voted for Bush in the last two elections, other than the executive officers of major multinational corporations and defense contractors, is a fucking dumbass.

One doesn't have to be intelligent when he or she has the full power of the Congress, the White House, the judiciary and the press to back one up.

Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 10:49 AM by LiberalPersona
It's a combination of public perception and charisma, these are emotion based traits, not intelligence. Also, their audience just happens to consist of the majority of the uneducated paranoid people. The leaders don't necessarily reflect the intelligence of their voters, the people who send hate mail.

37. Smarts aren't a necessity.....
When you have wealthy republican donors controlling the vote machines. The vote fraud doesn't need to be on a wide scale either. One or two stolen seats here and there throws off the whole balance of the Senate. I know of one Senate election (Georgia) that was certainly fraudulent in 2002, who knows how many others there were. We need to stop kicking ourselves for our imaginary shortcomings when we need to look at the true cause of our problems, democracy in this country has been dead since November of 2000.

13. Take a look around other message boards,
even non-political ones. Poor writing skills are hardly the sole province of conservatives. The rampant use of possessives as plurals is so widespread that it appears in major publications and is rapidly becoming accepted usage. People seem not to be able to differentiate between the words "there", "their" and "they're", and they can't seem to get it through their heads that a spell checker is not the answer to using the proper word in the proper place. America is no longer number one in the world in literacy and education - nowhere near it.

The decrease in literacy in America cannot be blamed on spelling not being taught in the Bible, homeschooling or personal anger, because it appears in far too many places and is too widespread for any of these causes to be the whole story. A general dumbing down of the American school system began in the 1960's and 1970's, and it has continued downward ever since. Expectations of students have been dramatically lowered in the last three decades. Add to that really keen innovations like "invented spelling" and "whole reading" and it's no wonder that you find that "apple's" are on sale at the grocery store all the time and people write things like "I'll be their in a wile if u want too sea me" and feel that so long as the reader can manage to sort out the meaning behind their mangled word usage, everything's okay.

As another poster in this thread has said, assuming that conservatives are stupid isn't a wise move. As does every group, conservatives have their share of illiterates and fools - and those illiterates and fools are a very good diversion when they speak out publicly and make laughingstocks of themselves. While liberals are busy laughing at the conservative idiots and feeling superior over Shrub's spoonerisms and the poor spelling skills of people on message boards, the smart conservatives have managed to take over the American government, strip Americans of many rights that were thought to be sacrosanct, and are rapidly making America into a fascist nation.

36. Huh
Invented spelling is a natural phase all children go through as they learn language. You did it. I did it. Some adolescent idiots get stuck with it, and call it trendy.

"Whole reading" and other holistic approaches to literacy education have long been bashed by right-wing types because it's empowering to the student and to the parent. Any good language arts program will include both holistic methods and phonics content in its curriculum.

14. I am very anal about spelling and grammar
I don't trust spell-check because it cannot differentiate amongst words e.g. "their" "there" "they're" or "to" "too" "two" because they are all words. I will run the check to catch the more blatant mistakes, but I still proofread. Because I'm like that. Also helps to have an English degree from back in day when there were no computers. Heee.

18. Homophobia
It never fails, but when the "Hate Mailbag" comes out, it is always laced with homophobic remarks. They must be so thrilled we still don't have full civil rights, because then they'd have to find another group to use to target with their hate openly. I love reading the hate mailbag because it really is funny, in a sad way.

23. I've always wondered about that too
Every time I'm in a debate with a fundie/conservative/freeper their posts are always rife with spelling errors. Often even the simplest words are misspelled. Considering how they rant about how deplorable public education is and how superior their private/homeschooling educations are, one would think they could spell basic words. Apparently though, their fancy "educations" don't contain much outside of twisted Bible lessons and right-wing rhetoric, which they learn by rote.

It's not really much of a boggle, you can't be too educated and still turn right. At some point, you gain understanding of logic and the right wing appears as a Pablo Picasso painting.

Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 12:22 PM by SeveneightyWhoa
You wouldn't believe how many hate emails I received -- with even worse spelling and grammer -- when I ran a liberal satire site (people believed it was a real right-wing site). E-mails just full of hatred and flaming stupidity, from liberals!

Plus, I'm sure Skinner only picks and chooses the absolute worst letters from conservatives. It wouldn't be fun portraying them in a good light, would it? And it'd be hard to come up with a snappy comeback to a smart letter.

I hate when people generalize one small biased sample onto an entire group of peopple -- ie. "wow, look at those dumb e-mails, conservatives are definitely all retarded!" There are smart conservatives, and stupid-as-hell liberals, too.
