RW blowback on "Deep throat"-Colson and Buchanan QUOTES
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 08:15 AM by underpants
This is from the Today Show this morning. I couldn't find the quotes from Chuck Colson on ABC WNT last night-he said that the ends don't justify the means basically... um okay Mr."Born Again"- convicted felon -creator of John O'Neill (Swift Boat LIARS) etc..

Anyway here is direct quotes from Chuck Colson and Pat Buchanan (Buchanan repeated much of the same on Imus this morning too). Expect these to be the talking points on the Right Wing Noise Machine.

BTW- ABC News poll has ~74% "Hero" vote here if that means anything.
http://www.abcnews.go.com/

COLSON
"The FBI has every personal file on everyone in America if the FBI can't be protected to keep confidences then it shakes you, it shakes the citizens confidence in government"

-HUH? By exposing a conspiracy to steal and spy and a conspiracy to lie about it THAT shakes confidence in the government???-

"I never thought Mark Felt would stoop to this, I... I'm very sorry to see him at 91 go out on what I think is a sad note..."

BUCHANAN -check out where he takes this (2nd quote)

"There's nothing heroic about breaking faith and the law, sneaking around in garages, he was CORRUPT!"(emphasis not added)

-Here's the doozy-

"He lied and lied and lied for years because he was ashamed of what he did and what he did was help destroy an enormously popular President and partly as a consequence of that, what 58,000 Americans dies for in Vietnam was poured down the sewer"

-Finally-

"Woodward and Bernstein in the end were stenographers"

Russert and Brokaw then came on to offer their insights.

Russert made a very interesting comment about how this is a perfect example of how anonymous sources ("which there has been a great deal of discussion about recently") and how anonymous sources ARE important and necessary.

BROKAW
He said that Buchanan at some point last night, on some talk show, said that Felt was a "traitor"

"Traitor to what? The truth?!?!"

"For Chuck and Pat Buchanan, loyalists to the end, to say this was a betrayal of some kind is breathtaking to me frankly"

15. Think so??? I'm thinking that Tom Brokow may have picked his....
...words in such a way as to be vague and allow convey multiple interpretations:

Definitions of breathtaking on the Web:

breathless: tending to cause suspension of regular breathing; "a breathless flight"; "breathtaking adventure"
www.cogsci.princeton.edu/cgi-bin/webwn2.1

Being an adjective breathtaking could convey intense astonishment or exhilaration.

and he backed up that impression by his further comments in the same vein.

Did you see it on TV or read the transcript?
I only ask because in the interview I thought it was pretty clear.

Even Chris Matthews is saying these guys are crazy Nixonites, and I never trust him. Good news is that the Nixon worshipers apparently look like the crazy traveling carnival they are, and apparently not just to us. RW bleating sheep notwithstanding, of course.

8. Here is my take:
They are warming up on discrediting Deep Throat.
If they can, it will prepare them to discredit any one who dares indict them for their crimes against the Constitution.

I have been getting all sorts of crap from repukes this morning calling Felt everything from derelict in his duties to treasonous.

9. I saw that. Luckily, Colson & Buchanan came across as the whackjobs they
truly are. And even more fortunately, Brokaw & Russert did highlight how absurd their demonizing Felt was for uncovering corruption (Brokaw more than Russert).

Get real - blaming Felt for the meaningless deaths of Vietnam Vets?!?! Why is that the only time these guys are interested in our dead soldiers is when they can use them as a political club?

When those two nutbags were practically spitting nails in their condemnation of Felt (and lauding of Nixon, oh please), I went back and forth from an angry "You MUST be shitting me!", to laughing uncontrollably. That about sums up everyone of these Nixon rehabbers / devotees - completely absurd, yet scary at the same time that they can put this forward with a straight face.

When you can put protecting the felonious Nixon administration over protecting the interest of America against raw abuse of power and absolute corruption - YOU (Buchanan, Colson, et al) are the traitors to your country. Not to mention you highlight your own lack of conscience and a seriously fucked up life perspective.

Thank God my brain is wired much differently.

12. That's is pretty much what I was thinking (rewound the DVR to take notes)
They did come off as complete whack jobs.

The funny part (expect Brent Bozell to highlight this was as "liberal media") was Katie Couric saying to Tom Brokaw "I thought Watergate was a BAD thing?"

Brokaw "I did too .... even in 1973"

:eyes:

madness.

13. Colson and Buchanan weer both Nixon ass lickers....
what did you expect them to say? They adored the man (Nixon) and both lost their cushy jobs when Nixon resigned as well. Nixon was a blight upon America and deserved everything he got. The Pukes have been pissed about it ever since and the witch hunt against Clinton is evidence of that.
Colson and Buchanan can both kiss my rosy red ass.
Felt is an American hero for blowing the whistle on that POS Nixon. Nixon wanted to control the FBI and Felt would have no part of that.

16. G. Gordon Liddy on TV said....Felt's family did it for money....
It is all about money, per Liddy. Myself, when I hear Liddy condemn Felt, I know he did the right thing and he is a hero and a patriot to have helped remove tricky dicky, and many of his criminal mafiosos like Liddy.

Heard other comments on CNN. That guy Brown commented that if Felt, who was a top guy in the FBI, could not report it to higher authorities, then blowing the whistle to the newspapers was the right thing. Brown added, it was well known and documented that Mitchell, FBI director, was corrupt. Brown was contradicting comments from that guy Gergen who also served Nixon, and every criminal prez afterward. Gergen called Felt, dishonest and disloyal for not reporting the "alleged" crime to higher authorities.
----------------
Actually, Felt put his life and his family's on the line since all of Nixon's cabinet were criminals and corrupt.

20. Buchanan lead off with the "disgruntled" "passed over" lines
not surprising.

I didn't write down his exact words so I left them off the original post.

Money was mentioned too but John O'Connor (author of the Vanity Fair piece) said that Felt's family mostly brought that up at the very beginning of getting him to come out as a motivation to him (for the grandkids college education mostly).

Meanwhile, the Bushies keep protecting their favorite obstructionists: Enron and Arthur Andersen. Go ahead and shred. Go ahead and lie. It's OK. Our lapdogs on the Supreme Court will protect you.
Remember: lying is only wrong if you're a liberal. When you're a conservative, it's normal behavior.

During the entire Today Show segment they repeatedly showed the cover of the Washington Post with the main headline about "Deep throat"-the side article was about the Andersen ruling but no comment was made on it before or after. Nothing on ABC WNT last night either.

32. Yep-direct quote-all the Woodward and Bernsteins are editors now
sitting in their comfortable positions and not wanting to rock the boat.

There was some discussion of how the hard driving journalists of the Vietnam era were now basically running things now but didn't want to report on the anit-Iraq War movement because:
1.Didn't want to endanger their positions and retirements
2.Didn't want to be reminded of what they WERE as they look out the window at "young people" doing what they used to do.

33. Amazingly, Tweety just said on NBC that these Nixon apologists
should be taken for exactly what they are - Nixon devotees who got burned (by their own boss), and have a vested interested in re-writing history vis a vis their own biographies, etc.

He was pretty flabbergasted that anyone (the female Today anchor, whatshername - not Couric) would take their comments seriously since THEY were the ones were were CONVICTED in this deal (my words and summary of what Matthews said). He was slack-jawed and practically rolling his eyes on the "family just wants money" and "Felt should have reported it to his (corrupt) bosses" RW spin angles.

Yep, the RW talking points parrot circle is out in full force and MSM is once again giving latitude and credence by airing out their bullshit.

Other than that forehead slapping, glorious moment just now, I still consider Matthews a twit. But thanks for that Chris!
