Have the mag. ribbons reached their lowest point?
We've had posts on those magnetic ribbons, but today I saw one that had me puzzled. On a car, same size and looped shape as others, Black and Yellow with the flowery lettering, "Go Hawkeyes" and the head of the Iowa University mascot.

Was it a joke? Or are the IU atheletic teams being held hostage, or having a bad year? Or is this country so numbnuts stupid about its symbols that putting your college team on a ribbon is as valid and worthy a statment of support as the "pray for our troops" and "Support our President" ribbons? If it's a joke, I don't get it. Is our country so debased? What next, White Sox plastic wrist bands?

3. Ive seen "Support our Troops" and "Go Cheifs"
Right next to each other on the back of an SUV here in the KC area.

Makes me sick.

It makes it very clear how insincere the people with those ribbons really are.

11. Supporting troops in the same way they support the Chiefs.
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 07:27 PM by Inland
Cheering from the sidelines, feeling bad when there is a loss of life or game for a minute, bitching about the score and not having anything real at stake except the thrill of being a spectator. Except for one thing: people are willing to pay to see a football game and nobody's shelling out a dime for the troops.

16. Our side, their side on the TV for your spectating pleasure
the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, the personal profiles of the players, the color commentary--

The fact is that news and sportscasting are set up the exact same way and enjoyed the exact same way and sold the exact same way.

4. Damn straight
Someone keeps forcing our Hawks out of championship games. It must stop! Them magento-ribbons is just the first baby steps to our goals. (Insert evil cackle here)

As a side note, I live just down the road from Iowa City and haven't seen one of these magnets yet. As for the colorful wrist bands, you can buy a mixed pack of 10-12 at the dollar store -- some of them are now tie-dyed looking. (Had to find something to do with those that came at the end of one run and the beginning of another.)

or Red Pig has been jumping out of the yellow ribbon for several months now.....frankly, I think this shows the magnets have lost what little connection they had to supporting the troops long ago. The one I had I got from the local Guardsmen and as far as I know all the proceeds went to getting them body armor before they went to Iraq. When the cheap convenience store versions came out, I ditched mine.

9. For real: "Support Autism Research" and "Support Animal Shelter"
Saw 4 or 5 of those today.

Let's just get all the way there and make "Coke" and "Pepsi", "McDonald's" and "Burger King."

That's the point.

10. I saw a red one with ACE Hardware on it... in South Pasadena, CA
And I have students wearing the wrist bands that say "player" and "pimp" on them. According to the kids, the bands cost their paretns $5. I told them it was 5 wasted dollars.

15. This worthless gesture brought to you by ACE!
Even buying a ribbon is too much burden for our patriotic Americans. They have to be given one in a promotion.

I'm going to be sick.
