Education speaker on Dobbs: Orwellian Education Push

Here's my email to Dobbs on one of the speakers on his show tonight. In this era of Republican 'personal responsibility', how come no one EVER mentions what used to be oft repeated: that the number one influence on a child's educational success (or failure) is the PARENT?

"Watching your show tonight, I was very concerned with the comments by a guest speaking on High School Education (sorry, didn't catch his name). I wish you had been on the air with him tonight, perhaps to grill him a bit. As he went on and on with the same 'lines', his methodology seemed very clear: High Schools should be very influenced by corporations...let corporations control high schools, maybe? This was not apparent as he first spoke, but he repeated this so often it suddenly struck as propaganda.

His other main line of reasoning was motivating high school students to learn in order to fill their greed: let corporations control things, and then you can make more money. I was very offended by this concept linking educational motivation with greed.

Lou, I know you received an excellent education via the Jesuits. I have know doubt but that you value you your education for far more than the necessary paycheck. You value the fact that you were taught to THINK.
After 35 years in the business world, I will say that this is the last thing most corporations truly want their employees, in most positions, to do: think for themselves. You are more like a soldier in an army: ours is not to question why, ours is but to do or die.

And how come no one ever mentions anymore the number one factor for the success of students: parental involvement?????

If Thomas Jefferson, so proud of his efforts to educate people that he placed that as one of three accomplishments on his tombstone, could speak today, he would be eloquently and succinctly penning legislation for separation of corporation and state, and corporation and education.

Best wishes,
Deb Winslow'
