This 'Deep Throat should have gone to the authorities' is total B.S. |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 10:24 PM by MnFats
As the FBI's No. 2 man, he had access to all the investigative information --- and he knew the investigation, by design, was going to go nowhere. The Nixonians had the juice to kill it --- THAT is WHY Nixon appointed L.Patrick Gray -- a compliant ninny. Felt knew NO ONE would be held responsible for the WAtergate crimes ---- and they went FAR BEYOND a 'third rate burglary' - unless somebody took the information to the press. Remember, the Post was way out on a limb for months on Watergate. SOMEBODY had to keep the story alive.... God I hate these fuggin Righties like Buchanan expressing outrage at Felt. The sumbitch wanted Nixon to fight it out....which would have led to a bloodbath in Congress.....

1. The head of the FBI was destroying documents |
|
and was part of the Watergate cover up. John Mitchell was the Attorney General and he was paying off the burglars. The White House was a criminal enterprise. Who the Hell was Felt supposed to go to in the chain of command? There was no one!

2. The "authorities" were the crooks. Gee, that sounds oddly familiar. |

4. Speaking truth to power says Chomsky... |
|
is pointless. They already know the truth.
They certainly did in this case.

5. He DID go to the authorities |
|
In those days, when corrupt politicians were corrupt, people could go to the media.
The media...ya know..."the watchdogs of the government'....remember that? Used to mean something.
No longer means anything.
Meaningless phrase.
No more media.

6. What do these idiot wingnuts think |
|
That the DC Police could just waltz up to the White House and slap the cuffs on old Tricky Dick?
No, they know better. They're just angry at Felt for violating the Omerta code of their Cosa Nostra on the Potomac.

7. MSNBC: Deep Throat - Hero or Rat? |
|
That pretty much says it all. The obvious implication is "Of course he was a RAT."
We are sooooooooooooooooooo fucked.
America is gone.

8. It makes me very happy to hear right-wingers making that argument. |

This is one of those issues that really shows how loony the far-right is.
Every one of these right-wingers who are publicly frothing at the mouth over Felt's "betrayal" are saying very clearly, "we commit crimes and we don't want you stupid peons to know about it".
Even people who aren't that familiar with Watergate know what "Deep Throat" symbolizes. He's become a sort of myth in our society; a short-hand way of referring to a person of conscience stuck in a corrupt government. To see right-wingers on TV ranting about their divine right to commit crimes and abuse power- especially under this current Republican government- is simply surreal.
It's a rare moment of candor for these guys, and I'll bet they leave alot of moderate Republicans with a very bad taste in their mouths.

As #2 at the FBI at the time wouldn't it be fair to say that he was the authorities?

|
...would be shitcanned, and realized what a tragedy that would be for the country....REad "All the President's Men," by Woodward and Bernstein, please, please read it.

13. I understood what you were saying... |
|
I was just pointing out the irony of the fundies saying he should have gone to the authorities when he was the authorities. Haven't read "All the Presidents Men", but of course I've seen the film... As is usually the case, the book is no doubt better.

10. What I have always wondered about this deep throat guy is... |
|
since he basically ratted on the corrupt repukes in the White House, was he not concerned that someone would be following him or either the three reporters that he was revealing this info to? Did he not worry about getting bumped off?
