Ben Bradlee is not buying Judy's tit-for-tat "journalism"
Judy Woodruff just interviewed Ben Bradlee, quoting Chuck Colson and G. Gordon Liddy to him, with such as Deep Throat/Felt should have gone to authorities or to the President himself! Bradlee, assuming Judy is an idiot, pointed out that these guys went to jail, that the attorney-general was on the verge of going there, that Patrick Gray was throwing documents into the Potomac. Judy persisted, I think quoting Colson, that if "the President" had become aware that the FBI was after him, he would doubtless have acted. Bradlee looked at her in disbelief, and said something like: "You think he would have???"

Damn it, there are not two sides to Watergate. I deplore this tit-for-tat, two-sides-to-everything journalism. It looks like we're seeing Deep Throat being made the villain by the cabal and its enablers on the Right, and Nixon, et al, becoming the heroes. Outrageous!

1. It really is disgusting.
However, this dissembling is prized and rewarded by those in power. Excpect more of it.

SYLLABICATION: soph·is·try
PRONUNCIATION: sf-str
NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. soph·is·tries
1. Plausible but fallacious argumentation. 2. A plausible but misleading or fallacious argument.

2. They're so nervous
They're petrified that there will be another Deep Throat (please, God, let there be!) ratting out the corruption of this administration and they're trying their best to marginalize Felt in order to "send a message." Bastards.

the truth....like Sibel Edmonds!

Why doesn't Judy have Sibel on and talk about how things work?

even if there were another Deep Throat, the cowed Bush-butt-licking corporate press wouldn't run with it these days.

Why not let the crooks police themselves. They'll give themselves a fair trial and put themselves in jail if they find themselves guilty.

She can't possibly be that stupid.

6. D'Oh......am I stupid or what?
It just dawned on me why the right wing has to villanize "Deep Throat".

It's a warning...the proverbial "head on a spike" to keep other "deep throats" in the closet...

the message is this: Look what will happen to you if you rat us out

9. It is making
my head hurt, A LOT! How can anyone in this country not see these people for what they are? If nothing else this is out in the news. Is there half a brain in anyone these days? Calling the guy who brought down a criminal administration a bad guy? That simply is not OK, it is NOT OK. But a good portion of our fellow citizens apparently do not see this or think this way.

Good for Bradlee, just good for him.

10. Judy Woodruff must have always been on the "Dark Side" why else
would she have lasted so long in the Media. She really seems to be an idiot...but is she or is she just "paying back" those who've kept her around so long.

It's sad because she was one of the first women in journalism. Now she seems as bad as the blondie clones like Monica Crowley who are there just as an ornament. So much has gone badly with journalism. Especially when they started to make the big bucks and became the part of the elite...the very people they were supposed to be reporting on.

:-(

11. Bradlee *loves* Judy. Seriously
C-SPAN played a roast of Bradlee and Sally Quinn, his wife, given by a Washington Women's Journalists Association or something. Ben and Sally, great Washington party-givers, had some of their favorite couples to roast them. Judy and Al. Chris and Kathleen Matthews. James Carville and Mary. Bob Woodward and whomever he's married to. They all love love love each other and they probably all swap spouses.

It's an incestuous world and I think Judy's questions were only to allow Ben to rail on with righteous self-importance. It was for the cameras only. They'll be meeting later today for cocktails.

15. the deep throat revelation has highlighted the fallacy of "balance"
more than any issue in my recent memory. It's flat-out bizarre hearing these tit for tat debates about deep throat, where colson and g. gordon liddy get to act self-righteous, as if they are telling an equally credible side of the story. Sheesh.

Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 04:43 PM by Eloriel
when clearly there is such a thing as objective truth about some things (not just "spin" on both sides) and a RIGHT and a WRONG side.

I am sickened that journalism has come to this.

Not too long ago, some time after the Swift Boat Liars charade, I remember Ted Koppel on his show answering someone (gosh, was it Jon Stewart?? Memory fades...) with the notion that it WAS "news" that these guys had made those charges against Kerry.

Do you know (of course you do) what that makes any news organization that subscribes to such a notion? A rumormill and gossip column -- except I think most gossip columns have required stronger substantiation and sourcing than that. I was aghast and appalled, not that I should've been.

Edited to add: There are many great analyses and critiques of contemporary journalism, but this one really captured my fancy not long ago:
