1. I knew he was a nut
from the first time I heard him open his yap in the '70s.

Some kind of hitman wannabe.

2. Permit me to repeat myself....
Ahhh the irony. This from the party of personal responsibility claiming that it isn't the criminals' fault but the person who exposed the wrong-doing.

Wonder if they'd be willing to extend the courtesy to people who turn in murderers, rapists and people who steal for non-political reasons.

3. The official revising of history is in full swing.
"...Winston remembered this clearly, but it made no difference what he or any other individual remembered, for the Party said that Eurasia had always been the Enemy and what the Party said was the Truth. This, thought Winston, was the most frightening aspect of the party regime-that it could obliterate memory, turn lies into Truth and alter the Past. The Party slogan was “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.”

We are all Winston now.

4. Just figuring this out, now?
He's been a kook from the word GO.

According to Liddy's own accounts (which vary considerably from day to day), his jobs at the FBI included monitoring possible candidates for internment at secret concentration camps.

13. Ah, Assface Liddy
If not for his role in the Watergate fuck-up, he'd have had no life, no career, no dark brown dye for his moustache.

Instead, the convicted felon, disbarred lawyer, and reprehensible human being becomes a god to knuckledragging rightwingnuts.

Ain't America great?

5. Liddy and the candle episode
Liddy's world view is probably best explained by some of the colorful anecdotes he likes to share. At parties, Liddy was known to hold his hand over a candle flame until it burned, in order to demonstrate the merits of willpower, explaining that "the trick is not to mind the pain." Liddy was once afflicted with a fear of rats, so he caught, cooked and ate a rat, just to get over it.

The White House was a bit freaked out by such stories and other evidence of Liddy's extreme fanaticism. At one point, he reputedly sent the administration a message that he would happily stand on a street corner and wait to be assassinated, if they thought that would help.

According to Liddy's own accounts (which vary considerably from day to day), his jobs at the FBI included monitoring possible candidates for internment at secret concentration camps, tracking down America's Most Wanted and raiding the home of recreational drug guru Timothy Leary in a fruitless search for something that would stand up in court (in light of the drug laws at the time).

14. It is breathtaking, is it not?
The thug who broke into and bugged a political party's HQ is allowed to present his face on national television and impugn the morals of the guy whose whispers to the WP reporters helped put this thug's co-conspirators behind bars--at least some of them, and for a time at least saved our democracy from those who would destroy it.

People ask LIDDY, the convicted thug, the traitor, the conspirator, what he THINKS about the moral character of the witness whose whistle-blowing doomed the traitors' conspiracy?

And nothing is said of the FACT that Liddy served time for acts undertaken for no other purpose than to undermine our democracy!?!?!

Be clear about this: Liddy, and his friends in the Nixon crowd aimed at nothing less than the overthrow of our tradition of FREELY elected government. Whatever his motives were, and I don't even care, Director Mark Felt's actions saved our country at a critical moment. Alas, he could not save it forever.

18. Liddy is a nazi.
Some time ago, I read his autobiography, "Will", and there are several hints in there: hefondly recalls listening to Hitler's speeches over shortwave with his blond-haired German nanny, while still a child; towards the end of the book he not-so-discreetly hints he's in touch with "Odessa", an organisation of ex-nazis exiled in South America...

But my favourite Liddy incident is his recounting of how, in the runup to the '72 election he arranged a showing in the White House, attended by rethug luminaries such as Haldeman, etc., of Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will ( http://history.acusd.edu/gen/filmnotes/triumph.html ) concluding his presentation with: "That, gentlemen, is how to run an election campaign"

"Will" is one of the great classics of unintentional humour, imho.

20. This isn't news to us oldtimers who lived through
the Watergate years. Liddy is a sociopath.

What I find appalling is that anyone listens to him. I find it appalling that anyone lends him any credence whatsoever. The man is a maniac, plain and simple. He's a convicted felon. He was part of an attempt to destroy free elections in the USA.

What I find even more appalling is that there are enough people who tune in to his television show to keep him on the air - because TV shows live or die on ratings alone. So there must be enough people tuning in.

Liddy has become a "pundit" just as Nixon became a "statesman" and Reagan became the man who ended the Cold War.

History revised is a deadly threat to democracy, only outstripped in its ability to do harm by ignorance - and ignorance we have aplenty.

22. liddy once drove down a wash. street
and shot all the red lights out cuz he refused to slow down....this story is from the watergate era and was reported by (if memory serves) a fairly high level nixon flunky, possibly john dean or jeb magruder(?)
anyone watched the watergate hearings (the hearings have NEVER been credited with totally transforming the US tv viewing habits: in the summer of 1973 the watergate hearings were the most fascinating tv many people ever seen; they swamped the soap operas in ratings and the omnipotenti, or illuminatti, or whatever the hell they call the people who control america, were quite horrified...the hearings were televised by rule of law, and the piggy never let it happen again!)...anyone who watched the hearings faithfully must have marvelled at the scented elegant monsters who flocked to the seat of power, men like jeb magruder, or gordon strachan, maurice stans or even john dean (dean's a good guy, but he escaped having nearly been thrown to the dogs somehow, and the truth about that has never been told, suggesting john dean has secrets still; mind you, dean was only 33 in 1973 and was incomprehesibly, too powerful for someone in his position)
the story about a goof shooting out stoplights and just moving on (liddy served 2 years(?) he shoulda been put in atlanta state or folson instead of the club fed he did the time in and you can bet he wouldn't be a loudmouth nazipoo toughie now)
