No More Watergates
Watergate is water under the bridge. Hoping for another "hero" like Felt seems kind of childish and pathetic, and irrational given our current situation.

I can't imagine what more a "hero" could reveal that would actually take down the Bush regime (especially Cheney). There has been a long list of things that have come to light that should have brought an immediate end to the Bush regime that either didn't get
any legitimate investigation/press coverage, or didn't have a chance in the GOP-stacked Congress and courts. That's the major difference between the current situation and Watergate.

Starting with 9/11 itself, the Anthrax scare, voting illegalities, Plame, Abu Ghraib and Gitmo, Sibel Edmonds' testimony ( http://www.justacitizen.com/ ) and most recently the Bush/Blair memo, to name just a few...there has been absolutely NO followup or follow through.

Assuming we had tapes of Bush or Cheney(which they certainly WOULDN'T turn over the way Nixon turned over his tapes, regardless of a court order), the press would have to keep it on the front page and the law would have to actually be applied and respected.

The only mechanism left is a united people who turn on the puppeteers...the guilty corporations, the military industrial complex and the government they manipulate. As we sit and wait for our "heroes" to rescue us, the Bush regime continues to lock down loopholes and avenues for dissent.

2. Deep Throat was a source, not a hero....
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 12:21 AM by Jade Fox
If there were heros of Watergate they would more accurately be Nixonites
John Dean and Hugh Sloan, who would not cover up their boss' corruption.
Add to that list the anonymous Republican bookkeeper who risked a lot to
tell Woodward and Bernstein about money corruption in Nixon's re-election
committee.

No one I know is sitting waiting for some hero to rescue us.

4. The question of Felt's 'heroism' has been addressed in press and

in discussions here on DU...which is what I was making reference to.
McGovern was quoted as saying he wished another Deep Throat would come forward on the Iraq issue. Seems to me there is already enough info on the illegality of this war and the manipulations involved to not need a hero to present it.

3. Bringing up Watergate is stupid - here's why
Most people think Nixon was a bad guy already. If they don't, there is probably no helping them. The only thing that can come of this is republicans re-writing history so Nixon was actually a patriot and the break-ins were justified. "Oh, they were FBI breaking in to break up a communist plot" Yes - I've heard shit like this. RWers are saying BS like this now that it's been brought up. This can only work against us. We won the game, don't put more time on the clock!!

6. The story of Watergate is significant in that it shows clearly what
the neocons learned from it given our current situation. they learned what would be necessary in order to carry out their agenda and all manner of crimes. They learned they need to hobble the mechanism of democracy....to own/threaten/suppress the media, to stack the intelligence community, the courts and gain an advantage in Congress. Their agenda was NOT acceptable to the majority in this country, hence the lies and voting corruption. So they learned their Watergate lesson well.
