A Wal Mart Story you will love
Unfortunately, I think Wal Mart will likely just shut down this store rather than continue to get the bad press. But anyway, check this out...

Wal Mart wanted a store in wicked-poor downtown Hartford to capitalize on the...well, the wicked poor. Trouble was, the only suitable parcel was on Municipal land. So, the city made a deal, Wal Mart got to build their store, BUT...it remains on Municipal land.

So what, you say? Not so fast...because the store is on Municipal land, it has been determined that Wal Mart must allow city resident to use the land pretty much just as they could if it were still a park or other Municipal land. So, here is where it gets good...

City residents and activists have been setting up shop outside Wal Mart, right at their front door, and in their parking lot, and recently held a bake sale with proceeds advertised as going towards providing health care for the store employees! Just this week, they set up a remote clinic in the parking lot, offering free health screenings and basic care. Wal Mart is powerless to stop them, legally. All that is required is that the activists provide 24 hour notice that they'll be there.

(NOTE: The clinic I just mentioned was shut down by police, but only due to a clerical error which both sides acknowledge was just an oversite (they didn't get the paperwork).

So, anyway, this story just brought a warm glow. Sad that the activists have to resort to this, but good to see Wally World take a good sound bitch slapping every now and then.

1. Amen to that one!
I suppose I would make an exception in that case to my rule never to go near a Wal-Mart.

11. I hope they are getting some rent too
since they aren't getting any property taxes if it is on municipal land. That would seem to be a nice chunk of change for Walmart to save every year, wouldn't it? It's even better than a taxes cut deal, it's a no tax deal.
