Jon Bon Jovi performs at WAL-MART annual meeting
Just saw it reported on CNBC-TV.

(Jessica Simpson was also there - not too many pimples, I hope.)

Only time I've ever seen Bon Jovi was in Pittsburgh at the KERRY rally in October '04.

Disgusting. What a sell out! Is he hurting for money or what?

For now on when his songs come on my radio - the channel changes.

If anyone sees a link to this story, please post to this thread.

7. How you "vote" with your wallet can be as important as how you vote
I realize lots of lower and middle class people basically "have" to use Walmart, but its highly doubtful if Walmart is "net" good for them or the nation in general.

12. You have a valid opinion
the problem is with democrats attacking other democrats that help our cause simply because they adon't see eye to eye on a certain issue. Labeling someone a sellout when they did so much to help your side is absurd.

17. I know out of work people (admittedly devoted union guys) who say Meijer's
prices can't be beat if there's a sale. It's just that no one bothers to do comparison shopping anymore, they just think Wal-Mart has the lowest prices and go there (even when former Wal-Mart Managers have admitted that their prices aren't cheapest on most items.)

16. You're only a sellout if you get paid for it. Since in the end it costs
us all more to shop at Wal-Mart, you're the opposite of a sellout. You're being bought.

2. If I was a shareholder at a corporate annual meeting...
...and they hired a BAND, I'd immediately get suspicious that management was trying to hide something by distracting us.

I guess I've never heard of an annual meeting hiring ENTERTAINMENT before. Maybe it's common in the rarified atmosphere of the investor class...

3. Link
http://wireservice.wired.com/wired/story.asp?section=Breaking&storyId=1043674&tw=wn_wire_story

But the loudest cheer was reserved for a moment of humility when Chairman Rob Walton acknowledged that executives were "human" and "sometimes we make mistakes."

Protesters were nowhere in sight at the University of Arkansas basketball arena where the meeting was held, although some marched through Fayetteville on Thursday night with banners criticizing Wal-Mart's pay and benefits.

Celebrity sightings were plentiful, however, with Jessica Simpson singing the national anthem in a midriff-baring shirt and a performance by Jon Bon Jovi.

I don't see how you can perform at a Wal-Mart gig then pretend to care about social justice.

INFO AS OF JUNE 3, 2005 (Jun 3)

JON BON JOVI made an appearance at this year's WAL MART shareholders gathering in Bentonville, Arkansas this morning (June 3.) It was not a widely announced appearance so most of those WalMart shareholders and employees in attendance got a surprise when JON performed at 9:00AM (CT) this morning! JON was joined by BOBBY BANDIERA (on guitar,) JEFF KAZEE (on keyboards) and LORENZA PONCE (on violin.) The four performed acoustic versions of LIVIN' ON A PRAYER, IT'S MY LIFE and The Beatles' classic HELP! They got into Arkansas last nite and already Jersey bound for home.

11. Likely blame should go to his record label.
Wal Mart calls record label. "We sell a lot of your crap in our stores. Send some entertainment for our shareholder minions or maybe your next big name gets less than prime product placement." Record label sends Jon Bon Jovi, who, by contract has to go.

Or maybe Jon just doesn't get it and while Jon appreciates that Wal Mart gives lots of folks jobs, but doesn't see the flip side of the coin.

13. Good gawd.
How ironic is it that they did "Help"?

"Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me."

Sounds like Wal-Mart to me. :sarcasm:

On a sadder note though, I will admit  that Slippery when Wet was the very first CD I owned(birthday present from someone who didn't know any better).

But it was also the very first cd I destroyed.

Goddamn you, Jon Bon Jovi.

Earlier Friday, pop star Jessica Simpson sang the national anthem, and Jon Bon Jovi entertained shareholders with a couple of songs. Country music star Garth Brooks was also scheduled to make an appearance. Earlier this week, singer Jimmy Buffet and rapper/actor Will Smith performed shows for shareholders.

What's up with these people??

(CEO Lee Scott said) "There are more failures of mom-and-pop stores in towns that don't have a Wal-Mart than those that do," he told shareholders, though he did not offer evidence to support the claim.

He probably believes mom and pop stores that are in business are failures, somehow, according to his imperialistic perspective.

22. i don't care if he TAKES their money....
it's the GIVING the money back to wal-mart by shopping there that pisses me off.

and, really, his shopping habits are no big concern of mine. bigger fish to fry.

i hate wal-mart as much as the next person, but taking their money for entertaining just shareholders doesn't worry me. plastering his name and songs on their advertisements would.

it's like what moby said to his critics calling him a sellout. whether he takes their money or not is inconsequential, they'll find a way to get what they want anyway. it's the taking of their money and then using it against them that matters.
