If every first degree relative of the Bushes and Clintons were set aside, there would still be plenty of candidates available. I don't like 'legacy admissions' applied to politics. It just encourages an insulated political class.

I lived in Tip O'Neill's district the year he retired. Prior to Tip, the seat had belonged to JFK. After Tip the discussion of Democratic candidates focused on whether RFK Jr, his brother Joe or Teddy Jr. would be the strongest candidate. The other Democrats were long shots.

Hillary may be a great politician but I hope we find a different candidate in 2008.

In that situation, Bill will NOT be the elected official, yet he has a ton of knowledge, a load of the world-leader relationships to fall back on, all the contacts, all the experience...so...how could he not be inclined to share with Hillary from that knowledgebase or to advise her?

Yet if Bill were to advise Hillary, then we've crossed a big line - because the situation would now be akin to a CO-PRESIDENCY.

Of course, a husband or spouse may offer an opinion in a normal spousal relationship during a Presidency -- but this wouldn't be a normal situation at all.

I just remember how offended everyone was when they learned that Nancy Reagan was involved and using star-charts and astrology, etc. to advise Ronald Reagan on aspects of his life, decisions and Presidency. After all, Nancy was not the one elected -- only Ronald was. (Not to mention the whole discussion of the value of astrology.)

We would be setting up a much worse offense in the Hillary-Bill CO-PRESIDENCY.

So again, for me it's a matter of what's "right" and what's ethical -- we take the high-road EVERY TIME, and not make excuses for Hillary or Bill owning the WH just because they belong to my preferred political party.
