Nixon administration official "I'm surprised FELT didn't end up dead..."
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 05:47 PM by mzmolly
On Crossfire Tuesday Lawrence Eagleburger who served under Nixon, Reagan, and daddy Bush admited that so called "Moral Repug leaders" KILL people who cross them:

WATKINS: OK. Secretary Eagleburger, this is the million dollar question. I mean, folks have been waiting for three decades to know who Deep Throat was or is. Is Mark Felt, in your opinion, Deep Throat?

EAGLEBURGER: Probably.

WATKINS: Do you think he's Deep Throat?

EAGLEBURGER: Probably. You know, President Nixon once suspected him. I'm surprised he didn't end up dead somewhere because of that. ...

Anyone else find that an explosive statement? Oddly enough no one on crossfire even blinked about it?

I'm not *cough* posting much anymore ;) but thought this was most worthy of sharing. Imagine the fallout if a Democratic official had made such a remark? Apparently it's a given that Republicans in high office are murderers?

Use double quotation marks

"to introduce a word or phrase used as an ironic comment, as slang, or as an invented or coined expression."

I thought there was a separation of words and shrinks in this country.

Anyways, I wasn't trying to provoke you, I just thought it was interesting that someone (might of) said "Repug" in the MSM and wanted to know more.

On edit...added "in the MSM"

2. In 'All The President's Men' D.T. warned of lives being in danger.
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 05:49 PM by kenny blankenship
..There is a point getting towards the end I guess when Woodward and Bernstein get Bradlee up out of bed in the middle of the night to talk to him about something. They drag him outside because they think his house may be bugged. Bradlee wants to know what the hell this is all about naturally, and in the course of suggesting his house could be bugged they say that Deep Throat has told them that people's lives may be at risk.

That's something that occurred to me lately as a point that I would ask for clarification on (from all involved) if I were a reporter today. Did DT really say that to Woodward? Why did he say that if he did, what information specifically prompted that warning, and whose lives was he referring to?

Edited on Sat Jun-04-05 10:39 AM by AngryOldDem
Found nothing like what is being referred to. But I think considering how close the Post was getting to unraveling everything, it would have been reasonable for Woodward, Bernstein, and Bradlee to assume that anything could happen. By that time desperation was setting in, and with the number of volatile, vindictive, and unstable personalities in the Nixon administration, it would have been most prudent for all three to start watching their backs.

Only all the preparations for security and safety in the courts for those in high office today is giving them any peace. That bit of business is costing the US taxpayer a monster bundle every day!
The good part is the republican paranoia is still very high and we know every time someone accidentally treads there, just how scared the whole damned bunch is!

"Ben Bradlee: On one occasion Deep Throat told Woodward that our lives "were in danger." Given his track record you had to take that seriously but I don't think any of us really believed him on that occasion."

81. Also, it's a fact that G. Gordon Liddy was going to kill columnist
Jack Anderson.

Google "Liddy" "Jack Anderson."

For a more recent example of the kind of thuggery Bush and his friends use, check this exchange out from Congressional testimony from an Enron executive after J. Clifford Baxter's "suicide" (from WSWS: http://www.wsws.org/articles/2002/feb2002/enro-f22.shtml):

Baxter’s death was clearly on Watkins’ mind when she testified three weeks later. At one point the transcript shows the following interchange with Iowa Republican Congressman Greg Ganske, who asked her about the August 15 memorandum she wrote to Enron CEO Kenneth Lay, warning him of massive financial irregularities in the company’s accounts.

GANSKE: Did you keep a copy for your own personal files?

WATKINS: Yes, I did. Yes, I did.

GANSKE: And where did you keep those files? At home?

WATKINS: No.

GANSKE: At work?

WATKINS: No, in a lockbox.

GANSKE: In a lockbox. So you were enough concerned about this that you wanted to put this somewhere where it couldn’t be destroyed.

WATKINS: Yes.

GANSKE: Were you worried about your own personal safety?

WATKINS: At times, I mean, just because the company was a little bit radio-silent back to me, so I didn’t know how they were taking my memos or the investigation.

GANSKE: Why would you be worried about your personal safety?

WATKINS: Because it was the seventh-largest company in America.

GANSKE: And you were dealing with a really powerful person—

WATKINS: Yes.

GANSKE: —and a really powerful company.

18. Look what I found at the bodycount link:
George Bush Sr. became RNC Chairman in the midst of the Watergate scandal, when the burglars were still on trial. Unlike other Party officials, he actually had an office in the building where Nixon preferred to work. When asked how Bush rated a government office, a GOP spokesman replied that it was actually a "guest" office, although Bush spent a lot of his time there. According to journalist Al Reinert, "when Nixon became president, Bush became a teacher's pet, a presidential favorite, described in the press as one of 'Nixon's men'." We have no doubt that George H.W. Bush had a powerful influence over Nixon, as he had over Reagan in later years, operating as always in the background, behind the scenes.

39. Conyers? Maybe not.
But doubtful Republicans might want to explore Amtrak.

Is anyone doing a chart of small plane deaths of politically-related figures?

I did a very rough one after, I think, Carnahan. So strange. I wish a better researcher would do one. What I came up with simply looked bizarre. The small airplane deaths were disproportionately among Democrats except for one 4-year span in which it was only Republicans. During the presidency of George H.W. Bush, Democrats were quite safe in small planes. Republicans, not so much. As soon as Bush was out of office, Republican air safety returned and Democrats crashed like Icarus. Like I said, I wish someone would do another small plane death chart and confirm or disprove that strange finding.

Last October (on Lennon's birthday) I posted some of this on another board and was badly flamed, but I can't help it- there was NEVER any trial, Chapman was just another 'LONE GUNMAN" traveling around the country, staying at nice hotels , with no visable source of income.
John was ALWAYS a source to be reckoned with and a HUGE influence on our culture-there a lot of unanswered questions about his death.

21. Murder is the NAZI way.
And Eagleburger should know a NAZI when he sees one.

They don't beat those who oppose them. They kill them.

"No man. No problem."

Felt may be tagged "Deep Throat" and may have so been, but there's a bunch of stuff that came out of CREEP and the White House that indicate other sources, perhaps Alexander "I'm in charge here" Haig or George Herbert Walker "Out of the Loop" Bush.

Anonymous Sources as Composite Character

Is "Deep Throat" a Fictoid?

By EDWARD JAY EPSTEIN
June 1, 2005

On June 1, 2005, Mark W. Felt Jr., a retired FBI official, claimed that he was "Deep Throat," and he certainly was in a position to be a source for Bob Woodward (and many other reporters) during the Watergate era. Thirty years ago, in my book Between Fact and Fiction (1975), I wrote about Deep Throat,

"The prosecutors at the Department of Justice now believe the mysterious source was probably Mark W. Felt, Jr, who was then an associate deputy director, because one statement the reporters attribute to Deep throat could only have been made by Felt."

There were, similar stories in the Los Angeles Times by Jack Nelson, some published prior to Woodward and Bernstein's stories in the Washington Post, so presumably Felt had other outlets.

The traceable information concerned data from FBI 302 files that sent Woodward and Bernstein after Donald Segretti, which turned out to be, if not a wild goose chase, irrelevant to the Watergate crime. The prosecutors assumed that the reason Felt provided this information was, as I wrote in 1975, "to get rid of Gray," who then headed the FBI. Now that Woodward and Felt have confirmed this fact, it is no longer an issue that Felt was a source. The issue remains, however, is Felt the source described in Woodward's book as Deep Throat-- or is Felt part of a composite character.

Consider, for example, that Woodward's Deep Throat character tells him that a Nixon tape had been found to have "deliberate erasures". Woodward published that report in the Washington Post November 8, 1973. But in November 1973, according to records examined by Nixon's biographer Jonathan Aitken, only six people knew about the problem in the tape-- Richard Nixon; Rose Mary Woods (Nixon's personal secretary); Alexander Haig (The White House chief of staff); Haig's deputy, Major General John C Bennett and two trusted Nixon White House aides, Fred Buzhardt and Steve Bull. Felt-- or for that matter anyone else in the FBI-- was not privy to that information. If so, Felt cannot be the sole component of Deep Throat.

34. speaking of Nazis, while just a little off the subject...
Of course everyone is aware that Prescott Bush (poppy's father) fronted for Hitler's boys by maintaining a New York bank account for them DURING the war.
He and others operating the bank were caught and history records how severely Prescott was punished. NOT!
But, at least his career was ruined from that point on. NOT!
After aiding and abetting our worst enemy of the time, Prescott became senator and wholeheartedly fought the creation of the Food and Drug Administration. (The government has no right to make sure our food and drugs are safe. These corporations can police themselves.)
How is it, seriously, that every time one of the Bushies drops his skivies and takes a big shit a gold brick plops out? What are the rest of us doing wrong?

They are so bloodthirsty, violent and accepting of this that they don't even care if you or I know.

If one lived during JFK and Nixon's term and Johnson's term, who didn't get that? Watching JFK and Bobby and Martin murdered in cold blood gave me a lifelong loathing and disgust for the murderous thugs in the GOP.

The brazen fools are doing more than any of us could to turn more moderate voters away from that criminal party.

When I was a kid, Repukes scared the HELL out of me because of those murders. But then, that was their intent.

"Forget the Constitution. Forget every tenet of American Government and just be like the Mafia! Because we are the "moral" party." Yeah, right. Talk about your "culture of life" and threaten to kill anyone who doesn't buy into it?

Now that I'm grown, I realize that they are no more than common criminals, albeit a bit more organized. Now they disgust me and they should disgust every person who cares about the rule of law.

And to think they don't even try to hide the workings of their criminal minds as evidenced by the statement related in the OP...

Oh, and when someone ends up dead who has been "in the way" (Clifford Baxter of Enron, Wellstone, the gent involved in the pre-Iraq info "scandal", writers, reporters in Iraq, etc) it's not "conspiracy theory" when it's all too often fair speculation.

Just because the vast majority of Americans wouldn't do such a thing does not make it out of the realm of possibility. Just because one invokes the name of Jesus at every turn does not cause a halo to appear.

82. This is not surprising (hence my screen name)...
it is a reflection of just how far the bar has been lowered or raised, depending on how you look at it.

When there is Senate debate over the singularly WORSE possible candidate (Bolton), when most people in the US are utterly ignorant of the existence of the Downing Street Memo, etc etc. such things don't surprise me.

I've never actually read "Through the Looking Glass", but from what I've heard, we are living it now.

Here's what my Mom emailed me about it, after I sent her this OP:

Remember Martha Mitchell? I wish the news media would dredge that up. She knew and was going to go public. Her husband had her sedated and declared mentally incompetent. She was always looked on as a looney tune broad from Arkansas when in reality she was just trying to get someone to listen to her. She died not a lot later and I was always inclined to think she was murdered.
