No matter who our nominee is, this is what s/he should say

at the Democratic National Convention.

You, the people of this country, face a choice which can be summed up as follows. Do you hate gays more than you love your country? After 8 long years of Republican rule, there is nothing they can point to which is better. They inherited surplus and gave you deficit. They inherited peace and gave you war. They inherited prosperity and gave you want. They inherited a lowered abortion rate and gave you more abortions. They inherited the lowest unemployment rate in history and gave you greater unemployment. They inherited a military that was second to none and gave you a military which can't meet its quotas. They inherited record numbers of minorites employed and gave you record numbers of minorites looking for jobs. There inherited a bull market and produced a bear market. They inherited a Medicaid program on the verge of insuring all poor children and gave you a Medicaid program that has people in MO dying for want of medical care. They inherited air and water which were getting cleaner and gave you dirtier air and water.

Let me be blunt here, you can't indulge your hatred of gays and have balanced budgets. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and have a solvent Social Security system. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and have a vibrant military. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and have prosperity. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and give medical care to all poor children. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and lower the number of abortions. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and have a bull market. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and keep people in MO from dying of want of medical care. You can't indulge your hatred of gays and have cleaner air and water.

My opponent will tell you that a vote for him is the moral choice. I can't and won't tell you a vote for me is the moral choice but instead I will ask you: Is it moral to let people die of want of medical care? Is it moral to start a never ending war in Iraq simply because you can? Is it moral to steal money for Social Security and give it to billionaires? Is it moral to cause the number of abortions to increase? Is it moral to leave our grandchildren to pay our bills? Is it moral to leave poverty in your wake? I can't answer those questions for you. Only you can decide what is moral and what isn't.

I make these promises to you tonight. If you elect me and a Democratic Congress I will give you surplusses where I found deficits. I will give you peace where I found war. I will give you prosperity where I found want. I will give back to Social Security what my predecessor stole. I will not let Missourians die in the streets from want of medical care. I will insure our children and their working parents. I will raise the minimum wage to $7.50 an hour. I won't start wars based on erronious intelligence. I won't make your kids pay my bills. I will leave the air and water cleaner than I found them.

In addition to the above I will insist we treat our gay brothers and our lesbian sisters like the human beings they are. I will insist they are protected by civil rights laws and hate crime laws. I will do my best to get them full marriage rights. Just like I will fight to uphold the rights of every other minority I will fight for them too. I am not going to insult your intelligence by pretending otherwise.

Only you can decide if you hate gays more, than you love your country. All I can say is that in a Democracy you get the government you deserve. That will be all the more true in this case. You can vote your hatred or your love. Your choice will make all the difference in the world.

5. That's exactly what we need

Someone who will simply lay it on the line for people. No cloaking things in a haze of God, "moral values" and other ill-defined rhetoric. Just come right out and say, which do you want more...to screw the entire country just for the sake of flagellating the gays, or to restore peace and prosperity even if some of your delicacies might be offended?
