An off-duty Sacramento police officer was arrested Tuesday in the hit-and-run death of a 13-year-old boy who had gotten off a school bus in Elk Grove, authorities said.
Jason March, a 29-year-old officer who has been on the force since Sept. 30, 2002, was arrested on a residential street about three miles from the accident scene. He is jailed on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter, officials said.
Michael Ramirez was hit late Tuesday afternoon after getting off the bus on Bilby Road near Stathos Drive, officials said.
While other students walked along a sidewalk on the north side of Bilby, Ramirez began to cross the two-lane street to grab a scooter he had left hidden in bushes there, said Jasper Begay of the California Highway Patrol.
