I think Impeachment is a bad idea... right now... |
|
I'm really concerned with the Dem's shooting themselves in the foot over this impeachment talk.
Right now, we have a lot of things going in our favor. If you look at approval ratings, SS, Schaivo, jobs, economy, and health-care it's obvious that Bush is failing at his job horribly. I didn't even mention the Downing Street Minutes.
Obviously these things help us with getting Bush impeached, but is it too early?
We don't have a majority in Congress, the media is against us, and the election was only 7 months ago. My fear is that impeachment hearings will put unneeded NEGATIVE attention on the Democrats.
My problem is figuring out when would be the best time. The 2006 elections are a long way away, and there is no guarantee the Dems will take back the majority. The media is full of right-wing pundits that would never turn on Bush, and with stories of white rich girls getting lost who knows if they would cover it anyways.
The only thing we have going for us is public opinion. If the truth came out about Bush, would even more Americans turn on this man. Would it help if the economy started to tank again? If approval numbers fall into the 30's would the press finally wake up?
I guess I really don't know. Maybe it is a good time. Maybe not. Maybe it's just me worrying about losing momentum. Maybe I answered my own question.
I guess that the Dems should wait for the most opportune moment. We have the smoking gun now, but are his approval ratings low enough? Is there another smoking gun that will put the nail in the coffin? Does it matter?

1. Take back the Congress, keep the pressure on. |
|
Actual impeachment is beyond our grasp right now, but things that are impeachable should be discussed.
Yes we should aim to take back the legislature in 2006, which is still a long shot.

The key, I think, is not to impeach - rather, have lots and lots of high profile investigations. Drag the misadministration's misdeeds in front of the public again, again, and again. Create a link between the word "Republican" and "Lie". Throw in "Dead Soldier" so that people remember well who caused the deaths and the injuries.
Even though it would be hilarious to see the chimpster trying to talk his way out of trouble, even though it would be justice on several levels, the real goal is to take back Congress as well as the White House.
Now if a group of wounded soldiers, and the families of dead soldiers started to demand impeachment....and public opinion started to build for it...then (and only then)...deliver the culminating blow.

It shows some preconceived guilt. Not a good strategy.

6. So is crime politically convenient |
|
Then we only charge rapists when it doesn't bring too much focus on the prosecutor, and only give out traffic tickets after 1 year of an election.
Perhaps the police should only work on Odd years, and that way there will be no concern over electoral crossover.
Naaah.
Charge criminals with crime and be relentless, or otherwise, the crimes are forgivin and the very basis of justice is undermined.

7. There has to be mass support for it. |

At this point, Americans are clueless. It's going to take a lot of education.
Still, I am looking at impeachment as the ultimate goal -- the just ending to this nightmare.

8. Too many in the Houses, on both sides, are complicit. |

They're gonna vote to convict Georgie for pulling the trigger on the loaded gun they handed him? Riiiiight.

9. They are criminals! Impeach and remove from office! |

"My fear is that impeachment hearings will put unneeded NEGATIVE attention on the Democrats." :wtf: How can the bad intentions of the criminals bring unneeded negative attention on the truth and fact tellers?
Remind them of George Galloway and the Food for Oil scandal. Remind them of major inconsistencies of the governments version of 9/11. Remind them of the the Downing Street Memo. Remind them of Wedding parties gone tragic. Remind them of Valerie Plume outing. Remind them of the lack of any weapons of mass destruction. Remind them of their lack of supplies & equipmemt for the US military. Remind them of almost anything this administration has done that has actually helped the average American citizen.
No, not going for impeachment is aiding and abetting these criminals. Helping them to get away scot free.
