Rumsfeld Issues a Sharp Rebuke to China on Arms

By THOM SHANKER
Published: June 4, 2005
SINGAPORE, Saturday, June 4 - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, in an unusually blunt public critique of China, said Saturday that Beijing's military spending threatened the delicate security balance in Asia and called for an emphasis instead on political freedom and open markets.

In a keynote address at an Asian security conference here, Mr. Rumsfeld argued that China's investment in missiles and up-to-date military technology posed a risk not only to Taiwan and to American interests, but also to nations across Asia that view themselves as China's trading partners, not rivals.

He said no "candid discussion of China" could neglect to address these military concerns directly, and criticized China for not admitting the full extent of what he described as its worrisome military expansion.

"Since no nation threatens China, one wonders: why this growing investment?" Mr. Rumsfeld asked.

1. He should be worried about how our forces are misdeployed (and tied down)
in Iraq.

4. USA! USA! USA!!! We're number 1!!!!
Of course, by allowing corporations to gut the economic base, we won't be able to afford the bloated military much longer.

5. Guess whose money China is using to do their military expansion?
Maybe if China didn't have most of our debt and a free ride (at least for awhile) to sell everything they make in our US markets, then they wouldn't have the money to buy all those weapons.

7. Sorta backward, selling paper to them gives US money to build
weapons. It's not like we collect enough taxes, especially from the wealthy and corporations!

6. Red Meat For The Old Cold Warriors
Nothing pulls the heat away from Rummy and this regime than putting in the fears of "the good old days"...and no country does that better than "Red China". These goons have never recognized this country's existance (and it's over a billion people) and still dream Chaing Kai-Shek will rise from the beyond and recapture the mainland.

While Russia's back on the radar, China...being that large "commie" state has replaced the USSR as the ultimate boogie man and military threat. From the "stealing of our technology" to the Chinese buying up the Panama Canal to that silly spy plane game Bunnypants played in 2001 to this latest stunt, the Chinese are a great stalking horse when you need to keep people from looking at what really needs examining.

Are these people so dense not to understand that when someone threatens you, you take action to protect yourself. Does Rummy ever mention the missiles we have targeted at Chinese or North Korean cities? Or the location of the submarines off the coast of those countries that could launch a retalitory strike in seconds? Well, that would mean we'd have to discuss another topic like Iraq, wouldn't it?
