Why Bush is Getting Away with Murder

Check any opinion poll this month and you will find that President Bush's popularity rests somewhere in the mid-40 percent range. On specific subjects, like privatizing Social Security, Bush's ratings reach Nixonian levels of unpopularity, with about one in three Americans expressing support. And a growing majority believes the war in Iraq wasn't worth it.

Bush's and Congress's crashing support should be a signal that Americans are looking for an alternative to the right-wing politics that dominated the country. Yet, you'd be hard-pressed to find among the liberal organizations and the Democratic Party a sense of anything other than a feeling of siege and resignation. Why?

Usually liberals explain their impotence by blaming the American populace (or "the heartland") for being too right-wing to realize just how great liberal ideas are. Yet a "veteran Republican who has close ties to the White House," quoted by the May 24 New York Times comes closer to the truth.

"The only reason still up there in the 40s is that the Democrats are really brain-dead and have nothing positive to put on the table," the operative said. "This is more than a rough patch; it's a dark moment right now for Bush." So if even Bush's supporters can see that a real opposition could cripple the administration, why can't the so-called "opposition" see it?

2. Better opposition is needed, but also better press

Conyer is doing an amazing job and he get too little coverage. Here we have a man fighting a brave fight and he is being ignored. So there are two elements which need to change if people are going to pay real intention.

On the other hand it is a minority which supports Bush and I am still hoping that that will eventually be his achilles' heel.

3. He's right

If we let one part keep on the pressure and the public truth campaign (like Conyers, Boxer crowd) Pointing out the issues with their Cartel's policies (which doesn't take much)

The other dems (like Hillary, the reason why she isn't getting involved)should keep trying to push and point out their resolutions that aren't even making it to the floor. Or keep pandering Republicans with joint bills, so they can point out they did manage to get work done.

Personally I don't like Hillary all that much. I did, but she's has turned me off. (I don't want this to become a bash or support thread. Just stating my opinion as I see it) But she's smart in the respect that she's setting aside the struggles and just trying to move through the fray. Rather brillant strategy.

Perhaps it's planned by the Dems. Keep the focus on defense and let Hillary play offense, It is who they are planning to run.

4. Just who are "the Dems?" I've worked both as a volunteer and

a professional for Democrats since 1961. I'm not backing Hillary, nor are others I know. Her strategy may serve her purposes; but I find it less than inspiring. Give me Barbara Boxer any day. And Howard Dean. And General Clark. And ... .

"dems" all others sitting quietly not making any hackles rise. Hill is one of them. Landrieu all those others playing it safe to preserve the status qou
